Actually, it seems to me that the BSA has been more strident about the gay thing -- particularly about gay scoutmasters -- in order to avoid what has happened to the Catholic church.
Any sort of sex segregation assumes either the absence of homosexuality or the exclusiveness of it.

That's a valid point, even though experts say that homosexuals are no more likely to be pedophiles than heterosexuals. The claim is that the BSA now discriminates against Atheists/Agnostics too. Lets not forget that the LDS Church sponsored Troupes were discriminating against blacks until the court ordered them to stop. I think that was in '74.
In any case, the complaints that attracted the attention of Penn & Teller arose from within the BSA. Those who were criticizing the BSA on the show, are Scouts.
