That was the "H-4 Hercules" AKA the "Spruce Goose." Obviously Lockheed ressurected the "Hercules" name for the C-130.
This is what I love about men. You guys know all about this stuff.

According to
Fox News all 17 passengers on board survived.
DOVER, Del. — A huge military cargo plane developed problems after takeoff and crashed attempting to return to Dover Air Force Base on Monday, breaking apart short of the runway, officials said. All 17 people aboard survived, though several were injured.

Was it a C-5A or C-5B?
Don't know, but from the photo it doesn't look like a wing problem.

Operation Babylift is,IMO,one of the finest moments in the history (recent history,at least) of the United States Armed Forces.
And to think there are clowns in this country and other western countries that have, for 40+ years, seen our troops as war criminals and baby killers.

They may have put more cargo on on take-off, with plans to refuel enroute. They were still fortunate to not have had a fire. Good pilots.

I am not sure about that, however, the government had airplane manufactures compete on a transport plane that was a heavy lifter back in the 1960s, and Lockheed and Boeing were in the competition, and Lockheed won the contract to build the heavy lifter.
That is what came out of that program the C-5-A Galaxy lifter.
Boeing had a design , but didn't win the contract, however, instead of just canning the design, they used their resources, designs ( also with Juan Tripp's ( C.E.O. of Pan Am airlines ) input ) and developed the 747.
