Ran out of gas?

Possible but not likely I would think. Reports imply the aircraft declared an emergency inflight, that's all we know.

Reports are coming in that as many at 10+ pax were able to walk away from the accident. Several others have been airlifted to medical facilities.

Plane departed Dover, reported a problem and was attempting to make an emergency return to Dover. Some reports indicate a problem with a second engine, declared an inflight emergency.

It's surprising that there was no fire, given that it should of had some level of fuel aboard following take-off.

I can understand you being unable to forget such an experience.

If one of those babies had to come down near DAFB (I wish to God I didn't just say that) it is better it came down where it did than on the north side of the base. The south side is primarily farmland..........the north is all residential.

Thanks Coop...I have asked the mods to remove post #8...so that the picture police don't come unglued...and miss the real story.

I just got a call from the mods. They said to tell you it was a C-17.

Amen to that! As you know that area has grown remendously in recent years. If it comes to that, my home in eastern is under the pattern.

Story said "2nd engine out," but now we hear it was taking off, so gas probably wasn't it.... Bird ingestion, perhaps. Lucky there was no fire.

That's what I was wondering. But that would require time, and it seems that even the base's public affairs was completely caught off guard with this accident. I'd expect them to have a statement out while a bird was still dumping fuel.

You sure that's not a C-17 rather than a C-5?

You didn't have the right crew. I was stationed at Beale doing Mission Programming for the SR-71. We would ride KC-135's when we deployed to Kadena, with a stop at Hickam. I was friends with a couple of the flight crews and got to ride in the jump seat on deployements with them.

We would be sitting on the ground at Beale helping the Navigator and Boom Operator make a list of problems to turn in upon landing at Hickam. Of course some of the stuff would require parts to be flown in from Beale -- which would neccesitate crew rest and an overnight stay at Hickam. and miracualously we would all just happen to have our golf clubs, etc with us. :-)
