Good news. He is unacceptable to many of the principals.

But just last week there was a supposedly authoritave story about Sistani refusing to read a hand delivered letter from Preisdent Bush because he was angry about American criticism of the Prime Minister.... this is odd.

It's all over for him now. Once one member of SCIRI splits off it means the others are about to follow. Sadar has been holding the country for ransome, but it appears that the rest of the country has decided not to cooperate.

Washington and London have made little secret of believing that Jaafari is not suited to uniting and leading Iraqis as they look for a national government that can avert civil war.

I would say it is good news.

Jaafari has let Iraq slide badly the past year and that has caused a rapid growth in the militias both Sunni and Shia. Iraq needs someone new that isn't beholden to militia leaders or Iran and it looks like we might get exactly that.

Is this in addition to the 60% (IIRC) defections mentioned yesterday? Seems to be portrayed as if it is.

It is good news. He was a big hurdle for unity government. Also, he proved not to be an effective leader. He also is known to be in the pocket of Iran.

If he's ousted, is there any chance of Allawi getting in?

2 weeks and he'll be out of there. He's only being held on to by Sadr and most Iraqis have had just about enough of Sadr.

Only if the UIA fights amoung itself for another couple months.

Personally, I see Allawi as Interior Minister as the best case situation for Iraq right now. Iraq badly needs someone who will get rid of the militias and Allawi would be that man and as Interior Miniser he could go after Sadr.

Sadr would put a hit on Allawi before they could say his name.
