KEYWORDS: billychandler; democrat; grantparish; jena; lasalleparish; republican; tonyowens; winnfield; winnparish
The combined Republican candidates polled 43 percent; the combined Democratic candidates got 57 percent. This should be a district conducive to a Republican candidate such as Tony Owens, but the votes are not there yet.

I still think we have a decent shot here at chipping away at the 'Rat majority in LA. Chandler, the Democrat, looks like they dug him up from an old folks' home (and bears an uncanny resemblence to the slimebag Pat Leahy). If he wins, he doesn't look like he'll live a long time...

Tony Owens (R)

Billy Chandler (D)

Knowing how corrupt the Rats are, it wouldn't surprise me if it were the same guy.

anybody coming out of that district is likely to be pretty conservative, regardless of party--at least on social issues. Owens was not even the most conservative candidate in the primary. For instance, a hot issue in the district is the possible opening of a new Indian casino. Several of the candidates were adamantly against it. Owens said he would "talk to both sides."

On one of the Louisiana political blogs, there was mention of a restraining order on Owens stemming from a messy divorce. We'll see if that has an effect in the runoff.

While a divorce would never sink a Democrat in Louisiana, it could well ruin any Republican candidate. I don't know anything about Owens, just that he wears an "R" and comes from one of the most Republican parishes in the state.

I think the situation in LA would improve if the state returned to closed primaries, and each party could keep others from impacting its nominee-selection process.

What part of the state is this?

50 miles north of Alexandria. 80 to 100 miles southeast of Shreveport.

Winnfield is the traditional home of the Long dynasty. The Louisiana Political Hall of Fame is headquartered there. But La Salle Parish has been Republican since Republicans started to run in Louisiana; Winn Parish is usually Democrat but not always.

Wow, that area is *very* Republican in presidential elections. LaSalle, of course, is one of the most Republican parishes in the state when it comes to presidential elections, but incredibly voted for Blanco over Jindal, allegedly because Jindal isn't white.

I believe that La Salle is the only parish that voted for Republican David Treen in ALL three of his gubernatorial races. It even voted for Nixon in 1960 but not 1968, when it went for Wallace.
