Nepotism hadn't crossed my mind, but you have a point.

Does anyone really believe [Russert & Maher] embrace Libertarian principles?

With those two news media stars, it's hard to say. Maher clearly does not like to be told what to do based on absolute moral value judgments. Russert wants to seem independent and unaligned. Other liberals I've known were against any sort of restrictions on migration and international commerce. It came across to me as a sort of globalism in the name of reducing the power of governments to interfere with individual liberties.

In my experience, not even the local school district can respond meaningfully to labor market needs. How then could the national government do so. the stats they get don't usually reveal anything, because the numbers are so big.

Indeed. The government should just let Americans compete for the jobs instead of catering to hospital bureaucrats with Filipino nurses and south Asian doctors. They diddle the H1B numbers this way and that, while Americans have to pick up the pieces. Imagine letting the market reach its own equilibrium instead of importing a lot of accented third-worlders because they'll work for less money.

The other side of this is red tape. A lot of savings could be delivered if our judicial system couldn't be so easily abused. I suspect a lot of prospective medical students would be encouraged to join the profession if they didn't have to worry so much about frivolous malpractice suits.

I'd rather not have McCain nominated, even if that means the other real conservative doesn't win.

Actually, a real conservative has a much better chance of winning than a rino/(closet democrat) like McCain. Reagan, and other real conservatives have proved that fact by winning in landslides by unabashedly running as conservatives. If a republican moves to "center", as the MSM always advises a republican to do, the republican either loses or maybe squeaks by with a win.

Tonight, I agree with everything you say. There is a brain drain aspect, too. Who got the idea that we can have a society of only smart people? We'd be better off improving our schools.

Good! Maybe he'll listen, but I doubt it. I get so tired of hearing "Bushes plan...." or whatever.

It is up to Congress to make the laws, which we, the people, have an input on by electing our representatives (who represent OUR VIEWS AND GOALS).

It is up to the President to faithfully and unambiguously enforce those laws. Whether he likes them or not.

["Americans will have to get used to paying more for construction work, meals in restaurants, etc"

That's another fallacy. Have you been to a restaurant lately? A salad or a burger sets you back 8 or 9 dollars.]

Costs are usually whatever the market is highest willing to pay. With illegals you have a mixed market, so it's not as though they're reducing the price all that much; because their competition is doing it legally, so they can afford to maintain similiar prices and gain higher margins.
