Five years ago in The Nation Katha Politt was upset by the wave of American flags springing up like roses after a spring rainstorm in the wake of 9/11. She considered it evidence of "jingoism and American condescension." Fast forward five years later and liberals have gotten their wish: the American flag is a symbol of how evil our nation is and if they had it their way, it would banned everywhere.

(Denny Crane: "I Don't Want To Socialize With A Pinko Liberal Democrat Commie. Say What You Like About Republicans. We Stick To Our Convictions. Even When We Know We're Dead Wrong.")

Cue the Star Spangled Banner - (SSB)

You know, I've thought a few times, the lyrics to that song are sort of strange. Great - but strange - the theme "Are we still alive? Are we still in the game?" It seems strangely forlorne and hopeful. Maybe it was during the olympics.

Lately that anthem has sounded a lot more prescient.
