Flags Banned At Local High School- students SUSPENDED for bringing US FLAG to school

(CBS4) LONGMONT, Colo. Several students were under suspension for flying flags at Skyline High School in a debate over immigration that has sparked debates over free speech and patriotism.

On Friday, some of the students skipped classes and took to the sidewalks outside the school.

"If this country means freedom why can't we fly our own flag? It's ridiculous," said Dustin Carlson, a suspended student.

The walkouts started on Monday when Mexican-American students began protesting the immigration bill now being debated in Washington, which calls for criminalizing illegal immigration.

Several carried Mexican flags which started counter protests from students who bore American flags. That's when the school stepped in.

Principal Tom Stumpf said students were becoming involved in what the school saw as bigotry.

Mexican-American student Lupita Silva claimed there were racial slurs and epithets.

"Just because you're Latino, they hate you," Silva said.

Stumpf said he feared the conduct with flags on schools grounds could "pretty quickly erupt into violence." He said it's his responsibility to ensure the school and students were safe and called reaction to the suspensions "misguided patriotism."

Several students were suspended but only after they were told no overt action deemed to be racial would be tolerated.

"It wasn't because of the flag necessarily. It was because of the fact that they had been warned before," Stumpf said.

“I talked to two state (legislators) and allayed their fears ...” Stumpf said Friday evening. “We still display the flag in the classrooms. ... It appears in common areas (and) in our gyms.”

Notice there was no mention by the principal that an American flag was flying on the flagpole out front. Obviously, they don't want it seen outside the school in public.

Ahem, yelling "fire" is not the same as saying "fighting words" in school. Oh, I forgot about your pea-brain that cannot understand simple differentiation of uses of words where and when apporopriate.

And according to the news on the radio this evening - LA county schools are claiming to have lost some 1/4 million dollars each of the 4 days they had so many students out..I was wondering how a school district looses that much money in a day's time...and then I realize - they had to pay their bus drivers to take the kids to the rallies, not to mention other related costs.

According to the report - some 30K students participated in the walk-out all 4 days from Los Angeles schools.

That's NOT obvious to me - if all other SCHOOL displays of the U.S. flag remain, my assumption is that the one on the flagpole remains until proven otherwise.

If ALL flags are banned, where is the problem again? Sounds like appropriate safety control to me.

You are kidding, right? What country are we living in? Isn't Colorado part of the US? The Red, White, and Blue are suppose to fly in the US. Banning it is borderline treason. Those who cannot stand to see Old Glory fly on a public school campus don't deserve to live in this country, much less receive the benefit of taxpayer funded "education".

Last week, you were Catholic. You talked about taking communion to illegals.

Are you Episcopalian? Or what?

I wonder if your post will get deleted for the foul language? If not, I have one comment:

My allegiance and devotion

My heart's desire and all emotion

Go to serve the Man

Who died upon that tree

I was not a Catholic last week just because I talk about Communion. I am a Southern Baptist. Now, can you answer my question?

its not clear what allegiance these people have, not sure they even know themselves, they are more proud of being Mexican than they are American, yet they advocate more people escape Mexico to come to the US for a better life.

If Mexico is so much better we would think they would be advocating that everyone go home, they really dont make any sense.

It really appears these people are being manupulated,by by enemies of this country, outside forces that to seek the desctuction of democracy and justice and the rule of law .

Here's another song:

Give me one pure and holy passion

Give me one magnificent obsession

Give me one glorious ambition for my life

To know and follow hard after You

This world is empty, pale, and poor

Compared to knowing you, my Lord

Lead me on and I will run after you

Lead me on and I will run after you

1/4 million dollars in lost school revenue and 30K students involved, while the mayer of LA greeted and encouraged them . Somebody should bring up a law suit against the mayor and school official for contributing to the delinquencies of minors. These people are not above the law when it comes to handling our tax dollars.

Last week, you were posing as a Catholic.

You were talking about assisting a priest in taking communion to illegals.

Baptists don't have priests.

You posted an allegation and a question, the same thing literally hundreds of times, that priests could be arrested for giving communion to illegals. That was your troll theme last week, your bait as it were.

Why would a Baptist be concerned about Catholic priests?

Is your soup kitchen Baptist?

You said you lived in Santa Ana, right?

And you don't work for Loretta Sanchez, right?
