(CBS4) LONGMONT, Colo. Several students were under suspension for flying flags at Skyline High School in a debate over immigration that has sparked debates over free speech and patriotism.
On Friday, some of the students skipped classes and took to the sidewalks outside the school.
"If this country means freedom why can't we fly our own flag? It's ridiculous," said Dustin Carlson, a suspended student.
The walkouts started on Monday when Mexican-American students began protesting the immigration bill now being debated in Washington, which calls for criminalizing illegal immigration.
Several carried Mexican flags which started counter protests from students who bore American flags. That's when the school stepped in.
Principal Tom Stumpf said students were becoming involved in what the school saw as bigotry.
Mexican-American student Lupita Silva claimed there were racial slurs and epithets.
"Just because you're Latino, they hate you," Silva said.
Stumpf said he feared the conduct with flags on schools grounds could "pretty quickly erupt into violence." He said it's his responsibility to ensure the school and students were safe and called reaction to the suspensions "misguided patriotism."
Several students were suspended but only after they were told no overt action deemed to be racial would be tolerated.
"It wasn't because of the flag necessarily. It was because of the fact that they had been warned before," Stumpf said.
Sounds like the Reconquistas who threaten violence at the sight of our flag.

The United States Constitution does not protect falsely yelling "Fire" in a crowded theatre either. Sorry if this comes as a shock.

The state legislator should make it plan to the principal that he didn't enact the removal of flags UNTIL THE AMERICAN FLAG WAS FLYING FROM STUDENTS HANDS. No such safety regulations were inacted while ONLY THE MEXICAN AND HISPANIC FLAGS WERE FLYING FROM HISPANIC STUDENTS HANDS!!!!!

One has to wonder are the Mexican American student's first American's or Mexican's.
Because if they first are Mexican's than they should be respectful of this country. If they are first American than they should be displaying the US Flag with pride.
How dare folks push their agenda and in the end have proud American students unable to have the right to display/bring their US Flag to school.

Spoken like a TRUE Leftist. This is the primary weapon used to defend illegals - they call anyone opposed to ILLEGAL immigration a biggot.
Illegal immigration is illegal immigration. It just so happens that the VAST majority of the illegals are from Mexico and a handful of other latin-amierican countries.
Those of us with at least half a brain also see the invasion as a planned action that goes way beyond a desire for a better life. The primary organizations who support the illegals are on the record as wanting the SW US to be returned to Mexico - and many of these same organizations actually endorse 'taking over" these areas - by whatever means they can find.
They are carrying the Mexican flag while demanding to stay in this country. Have taken down the US flag and replaced it with the flag of Mexico. Many carried banners/signs saying we need to learn their heritage that they ARE in their lands (Mexican flag included).
They're Mexican's first and they should go back.

We lost the war when we allowed the left to equate illegal aliens with immigration.
