PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: With the First Lady traveling (more below) the President is spending a quiet weekend at his ranch in Crawford, TX, as Sen. Russ Feingold's stupid -- and unconstitutional -- move to censure him went nowhere. Following is an article from today's San Francisco Chronicle, one of the most Left-wing papers in one of our most Left-wing cities:
Colleagues cool to Feingold's bid to censure Bush (This is an excerpt. Click link embedded in title to read entire article.)
Edward Epstein, Chronicle Washington Bureau
Saturday, April 1, 2006Washington -- If Sen. Russ Feingold was hoping his fellow Democrats would offer a groundswell of support for his maverick resolution calling for President Bush's censure over warrantless eavesdropping, he didn't get it Friday at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on his proposal.
Counting Feingold, only three of the committee's eight Democrats showed up for the sometimes combative hearing Besides Feingold, the only Democrat to speak at the three-hour hearing was Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont. He indicated he might support censure, which would bring the number of Feingold's co-sponsors in his lonely quest to four of the Senate's 44 Democrats.
The two others who have signed on to support censure are Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa and Sen. Barbara Boxer of California, who quietly offered her support last week. Neither are members of the judiciary panel.
Most Democrats are nervous, if not dismayed, by Feingold's election-year proposal. It excoriates Bush, accusing him of breaking the law by violating civil liberties while skirting congressionally approved provisions for going to court to get domestic wiretapping warrants.
As part of her ongoing "Helping America's Youth Initiative," the First Lady is scheduled to visit Omaha's Girls and Boys Town on Monday as part of a three-state tour to highlight programs that help at-risk children. She is scheduled to fly from Albuquerque, N.M., to Omaha Monday afternoon for a brief tour of Girls and Boys Town, said Peter Watkins, her deputy press secretary. She will fly out the same day to St. Louis, Mo. She has been traveling and highlighting programs since President Bush announced the initiative during his State of the Union address.
Lastly, news was released that Gov. Jeb Bush (R-FL) will visit Scotland in July to promote the U.S. bioscience industry. The governor (and the delegation he will lead) is expected to spend two nights in Edinburgh and will tour research facilities in Midlothian.
THE WEEK AHEAD:
Monday the President will be in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he will throw out the first pitch of the new baseball season for the Cincinnati Reds' opening day. He will also present the President's Volunteer Service Award to Clark Montessori High School junior Eugene Goss IV. The boy said he is so excited he can't sleep. "I am a nervous wreck," Eugene said. "It's so bad that I can't get rest at night. I'm pacing at night. Monday can't come fast enough." Eugene is receiving the award for his nearly three years of volunteerism with Keep Cincinnati Beautiful, a non-profit organization that promotes litter prevention, recycling and community beautification in Greater Cincinnati. He also has been a volunteer for seven years at Arden Courts of Kenwood, an assisted living facility for people with Alzheimer's disease.Tuesday, although I didn't find information about the President's schedule for Tuesday, the First Lady will appear at a fundraiser in St. Louis, Mo. She will deliver remarks during a luncheon at the Millennium Hotel. Earlier in the day, she will visit an adolescent substance abuse Center in St. Charles County to highlight programs that help at-risk children.
Wednesday morning the President will give a speech at the Playhouse on the Green in Bridgeport, Conn., where he'll discuss health savings accounts.
Thursday, GWB will visit Charlotte, NC, where he will discuss the war on terrorism.
LATER IN APRIL: President John Agyekum Kufuor of Ghana will pay a two-day state visit to the United States April 11-12 at the invitation of President Bush. The two leaders will meet on 12 April and their discussions will include the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) and the African Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA).
President Bush invited Israel's newly elected Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to visit with him in Washington as soon as Mr. Olmert forms a cabinet following his win in the parliamentary elections.
Vice President Dick Cheney will visit Springfield, Mo. on April 10 for a fundraising event at the University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center, said Cindy Stein, chairwoman of the Greene County Republican Party.
