SENIOR RTE bosses have axed a Fair City storyline in which al-Qaeda terrorists attack Shannon airport, after deciding that it "did not reflect the Islamic community in Ireland", the Sunday Tribune has learned.
The script for the special hour-long episode was drawn up by Fair City programme makers, and presented to senior management in RTE in the past week. The decision was then made to pull the storyline.
"Fair City was considering running a special episode involving Muslim extremists and the proposed storyline did involve a Muslim terrorist attack, " said RTE spokeswoman Tara O'Brien.
"Senior management decided it was not appropriate to go ahead with the programme because there are no Muslim characters currently in Fair City and the script did not represent or reflect the experience of Islamic communities in Ireland."
O'Brien said the programme-makers had done extensive research before drawing up the script, including consultation with the Muslim community in Ireland.
"They had spoken with a lot of different Muslim groups, who were made aware of the content of the script, " she said.
However, O'Brien could not confirm that the Irish Muslim community had given its approval to the terrorist storyline.
The special episode was due to be broadcast later this year and it is as yet unknown whether a revised version will now contain any Muslim references. "This decision has only just been made, so there are no plans yet for the new script, " said O'Brien. "As far as I know, the new storyline will not involve any Muslims."
Fair City's one-hour specials have traditionally involved controversial storylines on topical issues. Scripts from past episodes have seen characters involved in clerical sexual abuse, while another episode covered the issue of teenage suicide.
I guess the Al Qaeda terrorists will be replaced by the old stand-by Eurotrash white guy terrorists.
Those Damn Swedes, I wish they'd quite taking over airplanes
"The Islamic community in Ireland"? I thought St. Patrick drove all the snakes out.
"..the script did not represent or reflect the experience of Islamic communities in Ireland."
Yes, wait until it does, by all means.
Knock Airport was on Al Qaeda hit-list (Irish airport, near a Marian shrine)
But that wouldn't reflect the Islamic community in Ireland < /sarcasm >
I also note there was a plot line on Fair City involving an IRA man, which was quickly brushed aside. Also, a plot line involving a Turkish-Kurdish illegal undocumented immigrant, that gloryfied PKK!!
I could go on and on about Fair City's left-wing outlook, but this would be a lengthy post!!
BTW, remember when the cast protested against the Iraq War?
IT - I didn't hear about them protesting the Liberation of Iraq, but it doesn't surprise me. I liked the part of the article about consulting with the "Islamic Community" etc. Next Time RTE makes a drama about the GAA, the Catholic Church or any other element of Traditional society I wonder will they make any attempt to gain approval from the "GAA Community" or the "Christian Community" in Ireland.
It would be unlikely that they would consult the GAA!!
Another thing I remember is that the show completely ignored the smoking ban - even though it was one of the most controversial laws in recent times - the ashtrays just quietly disappeared in McCoy's!! LOL
I guess the plotline would have been sympathetic to their cause in any case, justifying their 'desperation' against an airport that ferries 'imperial' troops to suppress downtrodden muslims, blath, blath.
Remember that lefty moonbat Tara(?) - her father was a "right-wing bla bla", his idea of 'conservatism' was "controlling the mess", that show's script writers are extremely out of touch!!
Give me Coronation Street any day!!
