Carroll Rejects Statements Made in Iraq
AP via Yahoo ^ | 4/2/06 | MATT MOORE

Former hostage Jill Carroll strongly disavowed statements she had made during captivity in Iraq and shortly after her release, saying Saturday she had been repeatedly threatened.

In a video, recorded before she was freed and posted by her captors on an Islamist Web site, Carroll spoke out against the U.S. military presence. But Carroll said the recording was made under threat. Her editor has said three men were pointing guns at her at the time.

"During my last night in captivity, my captors forced me to participate in a propaganda video. They told me I would be released if I cooperated. I was living in a threatening environment, under their control, and wanted to go home alive. So I agreed," she said in a statement read by her editor in Boston.

"Things that I was forced to say while captive are now being taken by some as an accurate reflection of my personal views. They are not."

Good morning.
"Her statements the other day about the mujahideen were obviously not her own."

My wife and I have been arguing about this story from the beginning. My wife got mad when I pointed out that if Jill only made her earlier comments in order to survive, it is possible that she is taking the tack she is now taking in order to do the same in this environment.

I stand by my belief that her own words will eventually condemn or acquit her.

A noble sentiment, and so easy to say from the comfort of your computer room.

"order to survive, it is possible that she is taking the tack she is now taking in order to do the same in this environment."

She's afraid someone in Boston will cut off her head?

I'm on your wife's side of this argument.

The Detroit News is reporting this morning that she, in essence, seems to have a different perspective on the situation than what many of us originally suspected would be the case. She has apparently made some pro-military comments, as well as some unfriendly to the terrorist filth. Additionally, the Plymouth (Michigan) Observer's columnist who is no friend of the US Military, the President, Taxpayers, etc. did not throw in an editorial comment condemning the aforementioned people/organizations while reporting on the Jill Carroll situation in today's paper, very unlike him. He once blamed the War in Iraq for the lack of funds to put on a local ice festival. Perhaps you're right, time will tell. Living in this world, and given her background, its easy for many to be cynical.

You seriously need to read her first remarks where she says she was NEVER threatened, NEVER threatened, I know what the article says, I can read, but for some reason you want to totally dismiss what she said in her first interview while under "duress". Try being informed yourself, it would certainly help the conversation.

Good morning.
"It's a very real phenomenon, but you sound like you've never participated in an armed robbery, firefight, or "tense situation at a nightclub"."

So, you are saying you are experienced? Those "tense situations" really suck, don't they. Glad you are still among is to share your wisdom.

For that matter, I'm glad Jill is still here, but her survival doesn't prove or disprove anything.

Good morning.
"She was with people who like to make videos of beheadings."

All of us are just expressing our opinions and that's all they are. For all we know, she spent the whole time with the Sunni group she wound up with in the end. Wasn't she on her way to interview them when she was taken and her Christian former Baghdad music store owner translator was murdered?

We will know the truth eventually.

Good morning.
"I did all the background automatic weapons fire for John Wayne's "The Green Beret"."

What a small world.! You did the background AW fire for the Green Berets, and I and my teammates threw beer cans at the outdoor screen, made rude noises and listened to .50 fire down the berm while watching the very same movie.

None of which has any bearing on whether she lied or not, or even whether you or I could recognize her lying.

This is another reason we shouldn't have women in the Marines or the Infantry.

You lost me, there, FRiend.

Women in the Infantry is a can of worms all by itself. I do believe however that they should be available to Infantrymen at all times.

"I believe Jill Carroll and if I had been in the same circumstances, I would likely have said anything to get away from my captors. I have heard callers to various talk radio shows claim they could never be compelled to speak out against America and the war effort and that they would rather die first. I am fiercely loyal to America and a strong supporter of our fight against terrorism, but in a circumstance like Carroll's, it is a far wiser course to do whatever it takes to be freed first and then to clear the air with the truth once freedom has become a reality."

I agree 100% I'm amazed at some of the reactions on here to this story. 99% of posters would have said anything to get out alive too. I for one am very happy to see Carroll reject those statements strongly and am glad to see she isn't just a terrorist dupe.

"She's as phoney as a three dollar bill."

How do you know? What do you know about this woman that nobody else on here does? What gives you reason to think that her statements were not made under the threat of death?

Ummm, I did read them. Maybe she was still scared s***less? I would be. I'm willing to cut anyone that slack for now. If she says anything dumb a couple weeks from now, then we'll know.
Unlike you, I actually read the article in this post, where she refuted what she said while still in Iraq. She's refuted it again today. Sounds like you made up your mind about this story a long time ago and you're never going to change it no matter what you hear.

Very cheap. I suspect that 99% of our keyboard warriors wouldn't back up any of their big talk in real life.

See post #131 here before throwing any more accusations against the fellow posters, that are (the accusations) no less ignorant than the statements they attack! AmeriKKKa, indeed. Your effort to locate those actual, and at this time, alleged quotes of Saint Jill will be much appreciated by all, I assure you. But the damage control press release concocted and read by the CSM doesn't reveal any more than Ms Carroll's presumably coerced video manifestoes!

Search her articles here.

This is my opinion if she has been so sympatric to the middle east why has she not gone into Iraq when S.H. was in charge? Why has she not gone into Iran and reported what is truly happing there?

She went into Iraq after the US liberation to report what the US is doing there.
