Nearly 50M Gallons Of Sewage Spill Into Waters Off Waikiki. Leave your name or hometown blank if you do not want it published. KITV-TV 7:15 p.m. HST March 30, 2006 HONOLULU - The massive Waikiki sewage spill has hit nearly 50 million gallons through the Ala Wai Canal and into the ocean, city officials said. State and city crews continued to check the ocean waters near shore and off shore on Thursday. At Ala Moana Beach Park, the Health Department tested oxygen levels and for salinity. "Salinity was still low, indicating there's still a lot of fresh water," said Josh Marvit, of the state Department of Health. The samples were sent to the lab to check on bacterial counts that indicate human sewage. "Generally, the more discolored the water, the higher the bacterial counts, but not always," Marvit said. Mayor Mufi Hannemann reported that the pollution didn't drift deeper into Waikiki. The mayor underscored that the city had no choice but to divert the sewage from the broken main while trying to explain why the bacterial counts weren't released to the public until Wednesday. "There was no attempt to shirk our responsibility from sharing those numbers honestly and forthright. We had many, many things to do. This is a major, major break that occurred," Hannemann said. The mayor said that the city wanted to make sure the number it released to the state was accurate. Hannemann urged the public to heed the warning signs at the beaches and stay out of the polluted waters. In an apparent change of heart about posting signs in Japanese, officials placed new warning signs at beaches fronting the Hilton and the Halekoa hotels in Waikiki. It appears that a patch on the sewer main is holding since Wednesday.

I thought dumping raw sewage into the ocean was a crime?
Is it me or is there a lot of flooding going on ...
EUrope has been getting it pretty good too in spots.
Saw some clips of Honolulu ,, damn! Waikiki waters may be contaminated for as much as a month.
I TOLD them not to let Micheal Moore visit!
Tell it to the whales.
Hopefully they have some weather that is agreeable with the situation to help thin this mess out a bit quicker..
Let me guess - a DEM mayor?
Sucks to be a surfer, right now, and for a few months to come.
aren't they democrats just getting back some votes?
If it were spam the locals would eat it up. After all, spam is a delicacy here.
I also like spam. But not the email kind.
Worse; they're pc-lib-dem trash on that island chain.
Happens all the time.
Have to wear plastic gloves to beach comb. Hotels give them out to guests wanting to beach comb.
Montezuma's revenge comes on quick and without warning.
Found out the hard way.
Oh Poop!
"If it were spam the locals would eat it up. After all, spam is a delicacy here."
Appears I forgot the obligatory /S
Sorry about that, it must have been the beef stew........
Nonsense. The ocean can process a lot of biodegradable stuff with an infinite supply of feeders. Especially microscopic ones.
We'll see how soon they lift the 'warnings', especially in the coves and inlets.
Probably sooner than they lift the travel suspicions for retired Army generals and 88 year old women.
