Father learned daughter connected to Duke case from media reports (Duke Lacrosse Coach Threatened)
Knight Ridder Newspapers; WRAL; NBC17 | TONYA JAMESON

DURHAM, N.C. - The father of the woman who has accused members of the Duke lacrosse team of sexually assaulting her said he didn't find out that his daughter was the reported victim - and that she is an exotic dancer - until a reporter visited his house.

The retired trucker who lives in Durham said he saw his daughter the day after the reported attack, but she didn't say anything was wrong. She even left her car at the house for several days because he said she didn't want to drive it.

Her father, a quiet man who tinkers on cars as a hobby, said he saw news reports about the attack.

"I didn't know it was my daughter," he said. The Charlotte Observer generally does not name victims of sexual assault, so his name is being withheld to protect the identity of his daughter.

The case has ignited campus protests and stirred racial tension in Durham. The woman at the center of the case is black, and the men she accuses are white. She also is a student at N.C. Central University, a historically black college near Durham's inner-city, compared with the more expensive Duke campus.

DNA tests have been conducted on 46 of the lacrosse players, who deny the allegations. A 47th member, who is black, was not tested because the woman said her attackers were white.

Last week, a reporter stopped by the reported victim's house looking for her, the woman's father said, but he said he didn't know what was going on. He called his daughter and she said the district attorney told her not talk to anyone.

"(She) didn't tell us anything about it," he said.

He said he also found out through the media that his daughter, who is the youngest of three, was an exotic dancer.

"She always told me she was going to work," he said.

On Friday, he installed a timing belt in a car and watched his daughter's two children play outside the house. He said working on cars and playing with the grandchildren helps take his mind off what's happening with his daughter.

He said she seems to be doing "pretty good," and so is the rest of the family. He said they haven't talked much about the reported incident, but it weighs heavily on his mind. He said he's grateful that N.C. Central has been so supportive, but he doesn't like how his daughter has been portrayed in the media. And he's especially frustrated that no one has been charged in the connection with the allegations.

"If it had been anybody but them, they would have been locked up, but yet they didn't because it's Duke," he said. "I hope them boys - if they did it - I hope they get what they deserve. I hope they don't go lenient on them."

District Attorney Michael Nifong said he's waiting for results of the DNA test and that he does not expect to file charges in the case any earlier than next week.

There's a lot that's not getting out.

He's more likely to take a slam dunk if he's being driven by politics.

You're not from the South, are you? :-)

Durham is an entity to itself.

And you need to understand that he doesn't need the Duke students' votes to get elected; he needs the town's votes.

On the other hand, he could also be motivated by the public furor and attempting to hang innocent boys....

The general feeling around here is that the team is getting railroaded.

People are in the streets with pots and pans putting pictures of the team on cars and screaming "Come forward with the truth."

Players are being harranged in class by liberal professors because the DA has declared that some of THEM raped this girl.

Somewhere between midnight and 12:55 a.m., when officers arrived, the victim told police she'd been raped and beaten for 30 minutes inside the house,.

About 25 minutes after that call at 1:22 in the morning, there was another call.

"The problem is there's a lady in someone else's car and she won't get out," the caller said.

A security guard at a grocery store says a woman named Kim pulled up and was worried about her friend.

Police arrived and stayed at the scene for six hours.

Police say the woman identified on the 911 call as Kim who drove the alleged victim to that Kroger was the second dancer at the house that night.

Doesn't this timeline have the victim reporting to police that she was raped, and then 25 minutes later she is in the Kroger parking lot with her friend? Or am I confused?

This is very political.

and this politics is destroying young men's college futures and reputations...at WORST there are 3 guys involved--who knows what team or who they were or if it happened at all..meanwhile the media has the who Duke lacrosse team tried and convicted..It's a disgrace and I hope the DA is brought up on charges for demanding DNA from the whole team.

Was there no line-up or sketch of the alleged perps? I don't get it, can't she identify her attackers from their team pictures?

It's very awkwardly worded; the call at 12:53 was the "they called us N...." call.

The police arrived at the house at 12:55 and searched for 11 minutes and found no one, including her even though she said she was parked out front.

They left the house at 1:06.

At 1:22, the guard at the Kroger's two miles away made the call FOR Kim about the girl in Kim's car who wouldn't get out.

Police say the woman identified on the 911 call as Kim who drove the alleged victim to that Kroger was the second dancer at the house that night.

BTW, last night when the DA was asked if the woman on the second call was the other dancer, he flat out denied it. He said that she had LEFT THE HOUSE by herself and had nothing to do with what went on.

Obviously, he was wrong. See where this is going?

No, no, and no.

He declared a rape and asked for DNA.

Was a rape kit conducted at the hospital? What were the results of the physical exam? Or is this DNA saying the results of the rape kit, like DNA, dont' matter?

Something else: was the $400 just for her or for both of them? Does it cost $800 for that?

I am sure there was; she was examined at Duke Hospital. But today there was some discussion about what they might compare the DNA to, which confused me.

I am assuming that the $400 they are looking for is hers or the other girl would be involved and she doesn't seem to be at all.

I have no idea what it costs but if her friend drove her to the Krogers she must have been there for the rape...didn't she think to get help during the 30 minutes? Something better than racial slurs?

A rape kit will collect any semen detected on or in her body, trace body hairs, fingernail scrapings all to be sent to the lab for analysis. Any clothes she was wearing at the time or put on after the alleged rape would also be sent to the lab for analysis. Underwear being the most obvious collector of forensic material.

The examination would include a physical exam to photograph and examine any visible bruises, lacerations, abrasions consistent with abuse. Also, a pelvic exam is given to detect forcible intercourse.

If there is a discussion on what they would test DNA on that tells me one of two things. Either they have no DNA or the sample they have did not render a full genetic profile.
