A Body Blow To Illegal Labor? Court rulings and legislation could change the game for companies such as Mohawk It could soon be high noon in Calhoun. The town of 13,000 tucked away in the northwest corner of Georgia has been reshaped during the past decade by a huge influx of Latinos. The big draw: jobs at Mohawk Industries Inc. (MHK ), the town's largest employer. The $6.6 billion carpet maker employs 32,000 workers in all, 4,000 of them in Calhoun and surrounding Gordon County. Once staffed largely by whites, Mohawk today has a workforce made up substantially of immigrants from Mexico and other Latin American countries. The lure of $7-an-hour work has helped lift Hispanics to 12% of Gordon's population today, up from less than 1% in 1990.

You'd be stupid not to commit a crime and degrade your neighbor's lives if it make you a few extra dollars?

I don't ever pray for people to have bad luck, but I may not be able to help but smile should I learn you've been laid off in favor of an illegal.

You bring up another good point. The SS Administration claims no responsibility to check and notify any multiple use of a person's SS#. They feel it is a big wind fall for them I have heard.

If it happens, I will let you know. But I am not afraid of a little competition.

Most likely those roofing companies are paying cash and thereby EVADING several payroll taxes that American companies have to pay, plus I'm sure they know that even if they pay their workers minimal wages the other costs of living will provided by taxpayer $ so it's a double whammy against those of us still trying to do it right and that's why these construction co's, etc. will fight to the end to keep up the charade.

IMHO the unstated purpose of "Guest Worker" program is to obtain data on Employers.

Rush made a very interesting point today about illegals who were hired in Nebraska a few years ago by the meat packing industry. The INS did its level best to enforce the law only to be met by unified opposition from the industry and the state's congressional delegation, particularly including Senator Hagel. The result was the enforcement action was dropped and the INS director at the time was forced into early retirement. If this is the case everywhere, then law suits like this might be the only way the law, whatever it is, can be enforced.

Hiring Illegal Aliens violates federal law INA {Sec. 8 USC 1324(a)(1)(A)(iv)(b)(iii)}
Penalties: imprisonment-criminal fines-asset forfeiture
Report Employers/Illegal Employees
Bureau of Immigration & Customs Enforcement @ 303-371-3841 x 301
Verify SS#/name @ 1-800-772-6270
Report SS# Fraud @ 1-800-269-0271

Come on, folks, put the pressure on employers. Call nearby restaurants and car washes. Demand that they prove to you they do not hire illegals or they get no more of your money.

Here is part of the script.

1. Hello, my name is Doug (no, don't use Doug...use your own name) and I hope I am going to be able to remain a customer.
2. I have made a decision that I will not patronize a business that hires illegal aliens.
3. I hope you are going to be able to guarantee to me that you do not hire illegal aliens. How can you assure me? (they will give an answer)
4. Do you verify the Social Security number -- SS fraud line is 800.269.0271. What else do you do to make sure you are obeying the law?
5. If you discover you have hired an illegal alien, what will you do about it?

When you are done with a call, give us a report. I am working on the way to confront a business that I am absolutely sure is hiring illegals. I think I want to do something like give them a 30-day warning and then all hell is going to break loose on them.

The citizen whose SSAN is compromised can face a big tax problem when it's discovered. He can owe income taxes on the phantom income reported to SSA by the illegal.

The Social Security Administration is coming around. There was a case recently in which a kid's SSAN was used by an illegal for over 15 years; then, when the kid began working, he got socked for taxes. IRS and SSA are now pursuing the illegal and his employer; the illegal has been arrested on a tax beef.

The feds knew it wouldn't "do" to go after a teenager who was about two years old when his SSAN was filched and abused by an illegal immigrant.

I don't buy it. The SS Admin and the IRS do not work that close together this would have been caught from the beginning if so. One case does not make a big effort. I will believe it when I see it. Also what about using a dead person's SS#. They vote democrat why not work?

I remember (barely) some of the horrible decisions he made back then. You gave me some background to put them all in context.

Doug

See there's the rub Doug, I don't see Color, Race, Disability etc etc etc (and the list is long), if you or I do discriminate for any of those reasons we/you get sued!

Day workers are just that, the local employment office has a pool, many are homeless, many are alcoholics or addicts, many are mentally ill, and some are probably illegal aliens, if the Government did there job we wouldn't have the open Borders, it is not my job to Process them! Just like I don't go out pulling over speeders or people that don't signal for turns, it isn't my Job and I would get SUED if I took it upon myself to make it my Job.

I repeat, it is NOT my job to determine anything but their suitability for the Job for which they are being employed.

And I would ask you to retract or apologize for assuming as well. You and I rarely disagree but you don't know me or my business and you painted me as a Criminal and as a part of the problem.

You are also unaware that my Wife is a Naturalized Citizen, it took us 9 years and a few dollars.
(She wanted to be sworn on the 4th of July but we had to wait until the 5th)

No, sorry, it was something I saw on TV when I was thinking about something else.....think it was a story I saw on local news down in Fort Myers, Florida, while I was down there for a funeral earlier this week. Can't even tell you if it was a Florida story, a national story, or a Texas story I saw on Texas TV before I left for Florida.

It's hell to be middle-aged. Memory, vision, everything gets shakier.

Sorry.

were an employer and could get the job done just as well for less, I would be stupid not to.

This is an interesting example--new house being built next door to us. I have built a few houses in my time so I carefully watched as THREE times the framing for the roof had to pulled off because the Hispanics d/n know how to read the blueprints. Finally, the plywood is on the roof and it is time to shingle it. The house is to have architectural shingles. There is a certain way to putting up architectural shingles--the Hispanic roofing crew d/n know how to do it properly nor were they able to read the directions on the shingle wrappers. Today, four years later, the owner has a roof with the shingles in the gutters, on the ground, in our yard and who knows where else--the contractor is no where to be found. Of course the 25 year guarantee on the shingles was voided because they were never correctly applied. This was not a job done well.

Now back-up seven years, a new house being built to the east of us--same construction company as the previous paragraph. Gorgeous home, architectural shingles, brick construction--no roof problems--I think you can guess the nationality and professionalism of the roofers.

And that's why I specifically said "get the job done just as well". This obviously was not the case in the situation you described. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for.
