Although it is popularly believed (by the uninformed) that lands in the East formerly owned by various Indian tribes were simply stolen, the only clear cut case of that happening occurred in New York State about 1830 when the Oneida Indians were declared to be "white people", and their land was seized since whites were not allowed to own Indian lands.

That was settled by the USSC not too long ago, and the Oneida are now in the business of selecting which New York stateowned properties they need ~ like schols, freeways, waterworks, all the good stuff.

In general Eastern tribes were paid for their land. They were given reserves in the West as well.
