Mexican flag burned after week of protests

Associated Press Mar. 31, 2006 07:10 AM

Tensions over immigration got a little heated Thursday in Apache Junction.

A Mexican flag was brought to school by a Hispanic student in response to what he said was a racist remark directed at him the day before. After he and other students raised the flag on the school's flagpole, the newspaper said another group of students took it down and burned it.

The burning and ensuing shoving match between the two groups of students happened before most students arrived at the school.

The school's principal said all six students involved will be disciplined.

Security was beefed up after the incident but there were no other problems at the school Thursday.

How do you know that these were teenagers? Are you writing in from Apache Junction? I will assume that Apache Junction is in AZ, as it was from one of their papers.

Other than that one name, what information in this BS article makes you compare six kids in a "ape the adults" moment to those to hideous monsters at Columbine? Could you please point out ANY information at all in this article, other than that BS headline?

Who wrote this article and why that headline? Weeks of protest? At what school? Total BS.

Dont you feel a little silly for wanting to punish the kids that actually displayed some patriotism and defended their school from the invaders?

If someone places a sign/banner/flag/anything on your property...wouldnt you do with it whatever the heck you wanted?

Unfortunately you are right. And unless someone does something positive about the situation quickly the shooting will start all to soon.

Isn't that a hate crime???

It seems more a mild response to an acto of war - trying to fly another country's flag in a place designated for our flag, which can be construed as an attempt to take control of our country by a foreign nation...

On a public school campus, you have no property. You learn that quickly. Anything you have on your person can be confiscated stolen at a moment's notice.

I had that discussion with a school principal once. I preached a pretty good sermon on "Thou shalt not steal" through what could only be Divine Inspiration. Haven't had a problem since.

Raised a Mexican flag on the school's flagpole?

I've had it.

Hey "student," teacher Miss Behave has a math question for you: I'm holding up three fingers, what do you have if I take away the outer two?

And teacher Miss Behave also has a reading comprehension question for you: I'm holding up three fingers. Can you read between the lines?

They substitute the Mexican flag over our American flag, then it deserves to be burned.

On our wonderous ABC affiliate last night they remarked that they were flooded with e-mail in response to the kids from 8-10 different school districts protesting and carrying Mexican flags. The responses were basically "This IS America, not Mexico. If you want to fly the Mexican flag, go to Mexico. Have a nice day."

They took down the American flag from the school post and substituted the Mexican flag.

If we were talking about marching down the street with a Mexican flag or putting it on your own car, yeah, let it alone. I don't believe it helps their cause, but I wouldn't advocate ripping it off their own car or from their hands.

But when they take down our flag from our schools and put Mexico's flag up, that flag deserves to be burned. Our flag is sacred, just beneath the Bible IMO. It is to be treated with respect. They disrepected it with Mexico's flag. It got what it deserved.

Now are there consequences? Yes. I assume both groups of these students will be punished according to the laws they violated, and they should be. I DO think they did the right thing in burning the flag, but I also believe in obeying the law. Sometimes you will pay penalties under the law for doing the right thing, and they should be willing to face those consequences.

But I won't condemn them personally, I'd thank them.

This is the USA. Not Mexico. Get over it."

VIVE LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS!!!

We still hear the eternal cry from our politicians, "More taxes for schools" (for illegal aliens.)

This happened in Arizona. Arizona used to be part of Mexico, as was most of the American West. If I were Mexican, it would make my blood boil to see an American flag flying over the land of my ancestors. I know this view is VERY unpopular on this board, and I expect to be flamed, but I'm tired of the anti-Mexican rants I read on this forum every day.

Or St. Patricks Day, or Robert E. Lee, or any other occasion where people wave all sorts of flags in US streets?
