Hill conservatives warn Bush of amnesty anger
THE WASHINGTON TIMES ^ | March 31, 2006 | Charles Hurt

House conservatives yesterday issued a dire warning to President Bush and Republican leadership that they will pay a devastating political price if they proceed with a guest-worker program or anything resembling amnesty for illegal aliens before securing the borders and enforcing existing immigration laws.

"They will remember in November," Rep. J.D. Hayworth, Arizona Republican, said of voters nationwide. "And many of those who have stood with our Republican majority in the last decade are not only angry, many of them plan to be absent from the polls" this year when the entire House and one-third of the Senate is up for re-election.

Sometimes you need to get slapped hard before you realize it's not a joke. I hope this is all it takes.

Easy there. I don't know who Bush works for. All I know is that he rarely works for US.

>How about allowing some legal immigration from somewhere other than from undeveloped countries?<

A while back, there was a case in the news about a woman who had imigrated from Hungary during the uprising in 1959. She had been unable to bring her son.

She managed to locate him, his wife, and his children. They came over on a tourist visa, and his mother tried everything to get him residency status. Because Hungary is no longer communist, and is now a democracy, it could not be done. Had he come with his mother, he'd have been welcomed with open arms.

This man is skilled, as an extended family, who vowed to prevent him from falling through the safety net, and our government refuses to allow him to JOIN HIS FAMILY.

This is disgraceful.

Yep - say goodby to the majorities and control of the White House. It was nice while it lasted, but not quite what I had hoped for.

Most of these critics could not tell you what President Bush has stated he is in favor of, and dead set against. He wants nothing like what some critics here profess as gospel.

Fox just played Reagan's speech where he professes that 4 million illegals should be accepted as citizens, as America is the melting pot for the world. He then signed an Amnesty Bill legalizing 4 million Mexicans, who are all still here... along with their families.

Reagan also promised that employers of illegals would be prosecuted to the maximum extent of the law. Remind me, how did that enforcement program of Reagan's work out???

Some of you people look at the past with rose-colored glasses.

Reagan was one of our GREATEST Presidents, but he allowed huge tax increases, Amnesty for millions, and cut and ran from Lebanon... some here act like President Bush is destroying all that Reagan built. It is truly sad.

Close the borders, deport all illegals, and then we can create a limited guest worker program with no citizenship shortcut!

Rep. J.D. Hayworth would make a good, forceful, telegenic, leader.

Compare and contrast Reagan's immigration policy with that proposed by President Bush. Which one is closer to what you want?

Reagan promised to enforce strict laws against those that employ illegals, stopping new illegals at the border, and granted Amnesty to 4 million Mexicans. He was PROUD to do it. I don't agree with what he did at all, but no one here calls Reagan a "traitor"... yet he went further that President Bush has EVER stated.

Secure the borders, deport illegals, and then we institute a limited guest worker program with no strings to citizenship!

At your Friday Happy Hour tonight, lift an extra one for all the Freepers who wrote their Senators on this issue. It is clear Mr. Hayworth read his mail from the Arizona Freepers.

Build the wall, control the flow, then we can plan what next. I don't get it, what is so hard about that?

Eastern Europe has a huge pool of highly educated, talented folks who we should be practically bribing to get over here. Whatever the other failings of the system, those fortunate enough to get a university education in some of the Eastern Bloc countries got a very good education.

At least many of them can read, write, and speak English, unlike most of the "immigrants" we seem to be enticing now. Sadly for us, most of those people are also too smart for the governmental dependency mindset that is required to become the next voting bloc, i.e. allowed in.

That's what I thought until the criminals took to the streets. Now, I think there will be a "long hot summer", and then right before the election something like the house bill will pass, because the bastards will realize they are about to be fired if they don't act.

"He's not clueless. He looks at conservatives like Ted Kennedy looks at Blacks. "Throw them a bone now and then, but don't work to get their vote, because they have nowhere else to go.""

Sad but very true. I regret that we ever let that country club RINO occupy the White House.

I agree completely with that.

It is ironic that certain Republicans tell conservatives to be happy with "incrementalism", or in other words meaningless crumbs, on social issues... and then when those Republicans (like McCain) do something involving sudden sweeping change its something leftist like this de facto amnesty.

America can't absorb 10 million+ illegal immigrants getting legal status at this pace, and when they aren't well-absorbed they will balkanize and turn to the party that will provide them with government benefits: the Democrats.
