Great article, but I came away with the conviction that not one of those poor sumbitches has the faintest idea who he or she really is. It's a mighty empty life when there isn't a person behind the image.

I became an adult when I finally decided that it wasn't much fun trying to keep up with the world and that it was time for the world to start keeping up with me. It doesn't, of course, and I don't care. Before I was an adult I would have.

You singled out something important. Some people don't want to be persons, they want to be personas. It is rather creepy when you think about it in those terms. A lot of people are living in a fantasy world based on T.V. shows or music "artists." A lot of folks have been given everything so they think life is a game.

Perhaps, but I think you could make that evaluation of just about anyone these days, not just the "Grups".

I know people who wear business suits, read the Wall Street Journal, and listen to Sinatra. I know people who wear embroidered sweaters and slacks from Wal-Mart who watch 7th Heaven. I know people who wear flannel jackets and cammie pants who hunt on the weekends and listen to Rush Limbaugh.

Most of them have a lot in common. They are just as vapid and silly as the average Grup, just as likely to be simply following the images they are surrounded by, and just as likely to have no idea who they really are.
