Maybe this will help. I've heard Bush say several times now that our immigration laws must be enforced. I think he means to imply by those statements that what you're seeing is his best effort to protect our borders, no matter how weak and anemic it might appear. While some of his defenders and some of his critics might contend that he really isn't giving it his best effort, give some thought to whether or not it really matters. No matter what laws might be passed, it may be impossible to protect our borders during his term in office. It might be best to just do nothing until we have a President that is more able to approach the issue aggressively. Maybe this is just a very weak moment in our history.

I don't see any point in castigating his most avid supporters, though. He's going to desperately need every last one of them.
