I'm trying to look on the bright side about at least one thing.
Yes he was.
There were differences:
1] The Cuban Mariel Boat Lift happened on the summer of 1980 under the anti-American Jimmy Carter's slimy regime. Reagan had to clean up the mess.
2] While governor of California, the illegal immigration of Mexicans was a trickle, compared to what it is under Bush.
3] During Reagan's time, the amount of welfare given to illegals was a fraction of what it is today.
In the end, however, I can't make excuses for Ronald Reagan. Reagan is an American hero who brought pride to America, tore down the Wall and ended a long Cold War. He was a patriot and a CONSERVATIVE.
But I can't defend what Reagan did. His action/nonactions on illegal aliens is a stain on an otherwise great presidency.
Compare that to Bush, whose temporary tax cuts and actions/nonactions are a minor blip on an otherwise stained presidency.
Had Gore become president and all the SAME socialist spending programs occurred and new programs started, and had Gore allowed the destruction of our national sovereignty by allowing the invasion of our borders, you would be so outraged you would be tearing down the iron fence surrounding the White House
That was not a blanket amnesty and according to Diane Feinstein neither is this..I would call it a comforter amnesty because it makes our senators comfortable and smothers us...In either case we should have learned some lessons from the 1986 failed amnesty, that is that they are full of fraud and only encourage more illegal entry.
The language in these threads has gone over the top. First, before blowing a gasket, remember that ANYTHING that gets out of the Senate has to go to conference. The Senate knows that. Be concerned but hang loose.
Sure the senate knows that they throught the biggest pile of crap at us give in a little and say they rached a bipartisan compromise..all the while Specter and Leahy saying this is not an amnesty..they take us for fools and are trying to perpetrate a fraud on we the people...The Senate has gone over the top not the people
We will know more of where we're going with this next week.
I aleady know how far some senators will go to sell out our country, its just a matter if any have the huevos to stop this traitorous act. the very proposition is a travesty against law and order and the will of the people.
True. If you could read all the deleted posts from yesterday, you will see how bad it got though.
Bush and the Senate are presidng over the Balkanization of America. Bush is also presidng over the end of the Republican Party. I for one have quit. At 70 I can no longer vote for any Republican and at my age the Dems will be all over themselves trying to please me.
You are right, rolling_stone, in all you said. Great post.
Don'tMessWithTexas, consider this:
Bush and Congress, before drafting the Amnesty for Illegal ALiens Bill, did NOT commission a number of independent think tanks to do a study showing the costs of the illegals (welfare, medical, school, etc.) to the tax revenue they produce. This could have also showed that for every one "worker", how many relatives, babies, etc. come with the "one worker" to draw welfare.
By voting on an Immigration Bill without gathering proper facts makes the Sentate and Bush a total sham.
This is like the Prescription Drug Bill that was voted on for a $400 Billion program, but became a $1 TRILLION plus program the second the ink dried on Bush's pen--they NEVER did a statistical study by independent think tanks.
You place too much faith in Congress. Congress, the White House, the whole bunch of them---they are dysfunctional, and they don't care about this nation. They only care about their personal power and popularity, not the nation. Their failure to inject statistical studies on these crucial issues is proof positive.
America is dying because Bush and Congress are killing us.
And Reagan signed what he said was a "one time" amnesty. The defenders of a second amnesty want to make Reagan into a liar posthumously.
Details missing are how many Homeland Security armed forces that will be needed, and where they are going to come from. What authority will they have against border crossers. How much will the infrastructure cost to support the forces along 1700 miles of border. How much will it cost to employ those increased agents (including all the costs associated with paying for federal employees).
Bottomline, I think Hunter's proposal raises more questions than it answers. But I appreciate you posting it.
I couldn't agree more.
What are the "costs" of rounding up and deporting 20 million illegal aliens?
I suspect you could protect our borders better than what is being done now. Right now, we are witnessing a more or less total collapse.
Several times over the years. You should try reading it yourself, rather that simply misrepresenting it.
Cut off the public benefits and let 'em self deport.
No one has the thingies to cut the snake off at the head.
California tried with Proposition 187. The Rats and the RINOs went ballistic when the election went against them.
LOL - are you saying the Plyer v. Doe does not read the 14th Amendment to give American citizenship to those born in the U.S.? You never did answer how many times you voted for Bush either. And how me voting for him TWICE makes makes me a DUmmy?
Is that going to be through Constitutional Amendment?
Yup...and then...
""In 1996 California (Att'y Gen. Dan Lungren) said that Prop 187 was not in conflict with federal law.
In September 1996 federal immigration law was enacted, and in 1997 Lungren asked Judge Pfaelzer for a summary dismissal. (The 1996 federal law included Sec. 133 - that local law enforcement can cooperate with the INS)
Judge Pfaelzer said NO to summary dismissal and ruled for plaintiffs; Lungren said he'll appeal.
Lungren appealed in 9th District Circuit Court in late 1997. FOR SIX MONTHS LUNGREN TOOK NO ACTION - IT SAT THERE. HE SHOULD HAVE MOVED THE CASE ALONG!
Then came the gubernatorial campaign of 1998, and Gray Davis was elected in November. The appeal process was still sitting silently in court because Lungren had not moved it along.
Davis was elected. The plaintiffs requested "mediation" in the 9th District Court, the court agreed to "mediation".
We know what happened then - Davis (who vehemently opposed Prop 187) "represented" FOR Prop 187. Neither the proponent of Prop 187 nor anyone else who co-sponsored Prop 187 was allowed in the bogus "mediation".
Governor Davis refused to allow the appeal to proceed and dropped the appeal, essentially KILLING PROP 187 against the will of the voters. This after having promised to support the appeal during his campaign.
Even the most vocal plaintiffs against Prop 187 said they were afraid that if it went to the U.S. Supreme Court it would be held to be constitutional, reversing Plyler v. Doe.""
