Well, it might be unpopular but this is what I would have supported. First real border enforcement. A huge fence wall whatever. Then some sort of guest worker program. My main concern has always been security. But I want to know who is here. That way the concerns of Security, economics, and orderly immigration is addressed. I keep hearing some of the wildest proposals that make no sense to me. Again, I know there are people who want every illegal deported to MExico now. Have them all start the process over again. I can see that viewpoint but it was one that never really excited me. Didnt seem to be such a thing that it would be a dealbreaker. But it appears nothing will be done now and the problems will get worse.
I don't think many people have problems with a guest worker program as long as (a) employers pay prevailing wages (ie taxes, FICA, etc) instead of paying under-the-table, (b) guest workers are properly documented, (c) being a guest worker has no bearing on citizenship.
Amnesty is the worst of all possible worlds. If a bill isn't enacted this year, then at least the status quo still regards illegals as 'illegals' instead of being placed on a citizenship track.
Finally a rational voice. I agree with you. Let's build the Wall of America and then we can have everyone accountable in America. I'm not that against Mexicans mowing lawns unless they are felons.
