Bush burns his base on the borders
Star-Ledger ^ | March 30, 2006 | Paul Mulshine

Imagine that you and several thousand of your closest friends decided to sneak into Mexico illegally. And imagine you then gathered in one of the largest cities, waving American flags and blocking traffic. Imagine you demanded in English that the Mexicans change their laws to accommodate you.

....

Rep. Tom Tancredo of Colorado is engaging in what amounts to open warfare with the White House on the issue. His aide Will Adams told me yesterday that Tancredo and other House conservatives intend to block any bill that contains either amnesty or guest worker provisions.

....Bush always has had ample authority to solve a relatively manageable problem with illegal immigration.

"I'm not sure what about this guy is conservative anymore," says Mark Krikorian of the Center for Immigration Studies. "He appointed a couple good judges and that was it -- and he almost blew one of those chances."

Krikorian was alluding to the Harriet Miers fiasco, one of a tri fecta of Bush blunders that have alerted conservatives to his true nature. The second was the Dubai ports controversy. The third is this push for immigration amnesty.

Krikorian advises Bush to cut his losses and accept a tough enforcement bill. Once that 700-mile fence is up on the southern border, Bush might revive his push for that amnesty that he re fuses to call an amnesty.

"A lot of ordinary Americans might swallow it if it were presented as a second step after enforcement was in place and if it weren't demanded as a right but as a result of illegals begging the forgiveness of the American people," he said.

Yeah this issue is really frustrating. The biggest argument I hear is its about security. We must control the border because we must know that terrorist are not coming to blow us up. Ok then. In my view a compromise could have been made that would have passed that would have allowed a wall to be built and some sort of guest worker program where everyone signs up and we know who they are. Answer =HEll no. Ok lets negotiate on the number the number of "guest workers". Answer- HEll no. Ok so in other words no bill will get passed and terrorist can still cross our borders because of a lack of a compromise and thats ok? I mean its insanity. George Bush is being a called a traitor for goodness sake on these threads.

There was a workable deal that could have been made here. I suppose there is some sentiment that the nation will rise up and in the next 4 years put in a congress that will enact the plans that people want here. I think that has much chance as me being elected Pope next year. In fact this issue has been handled so badly that it could hurt us. The result even more rights for illegal aliens if the Dems get congress and eventually the grand enchilanda itself. I am really clueless as to the thinking here on this issue. It seems that we are on a path that will not only hurt the party but very well create the opposite outcome that so many people desire here. However to mention that possibility gets one labeled with the most horrid names. I do believe the advocates of this no compromise approach must be the most horrible card players in the World. There sure a Royal flush is about to come up but its likely the hand we will be dealt is crap.

LessI`ve got this wrong, isn`t Terrible Tom against any thing beyond tightening the border? If the Senate tries that, your boy will fight and not vote for any bill?
Part of his reasoning is that will open the floodgates on more illegals. Guess that is means there must be a big problem with his security plan at the border.
I never have hired an illegal to my knowledge, but I have never known that I could find out with a simple phone call. I do know that most lawyers will tell an employer to be very careful cause a mistake could cost me my business. You keep saying that verifying immigration status is just a phone call, well, whats the number, who do I call?

My grandparents moved here from Bratislava and my Uncle went back (while he was alive) to visit our family there. My grandparents farmed when they moved to this country, they also became LEGAL citizens of the USA before they did anything else. Millions of immigrants have come here before these illegals who are now protesting. The BIG difference is that they desired citizenship, learned the English language and integrated America into their lives.

Where I grew up, there were Italian, Hungarian, Polish and other ethnithicies in areas of the city, but they spoke English and lived an American lifestyle, unlike what the illegals are doing here now. It's a slap in the face of all legal immigrants to amnesty illegals (speaking for my grandparents and millions more like them) - current tolerance of illegals gives a rude gesture at federal immigration laws and the law-abiding citizens of this country that expect our laws to be enforced for our protection.

I feel the same way. However, look at our choice? Kerry?? I will never vote for a Democrat. There are still a few good Republicans too. I will probably vote for third party next go around since Republicans no longer care about the voice of the majority. I would like to see a list of Republicans that need to be defeated. Its time to send a message.

" Bush can not solve this problem alone."

Are you done apologizing for Bush yet?

Bush is the problem - he has the power to sway and define tthe argument and to act. The only reason that we have this going on right now is because he is pushing amnesty. It has allowed the opposition to attack conservatives with Bush's approval of it happening.

The president has the power to shut down the borders - it happened after 9-11. Bush talks about homeland security but allows the homeland to be unsecure. You figure it out - and when your done maybe you'll wean yourself from the Bushbot kool-aid.

"The GOP House and Senate are responsible for themselves. In addition, most voters aren't going to risk putting the Democrats in charge of national security, no matter what the polls say."

Keep drinking the Bushbot koolaid - its funny to watch RINOs destroy the party and the conservative base. Its going to be great in 06 when Bush loses both houses and gets impeached by the democrat majority. Not because I enjoy watching democrats win, quite the contrary, but because I am sick of elitist backstabbing hate American value RINOs like Bush Sr/Jr. forcing their liberal will upon us.

Harriet Miers was the wake up call, amnesty has become the war.

Here's another one, delighted that Bush is going to be impeached.

Think he'll stick around long?

Go re-read my previous post. I stated that Bush is doing this to himself.

U.S. citizens are simply not re-producing fast enough, and taxes aren't decreasing. The baby boomer generation is going to totally screw over my generation (gen Y) if this bill gets passed! Think about all the debt we've accumulated with the Bush Administration. Who do you think is going to have to pay that back? People like me! My generation needs all the help it can get to pay that off! So let 'em in!

I swear Gen Y is just like the Baby Boomers. All me. Well we Gen X'ers have to pay also, but we will pay. Keep illegals out!!!

" Its going to be great in 06 when Bush loses both houses and gets impeached by the democrat majority"

I know its hard for you to understand the complexity of such a statement - but Bush is going to lose because of Bush. If he gets impeached it will be because he deserted his base and moreover the citizens of the US. What does homeland security mean to RINOs like you anyway? How about free speech, you like that? Does it bother you that he would limit yours? Or how about his support of affirmative action? No, well then how about him almost putting on a liberal to the SCOTUS ? Not enough how about growing govt. beyoond any other president in history?

I know you dont care its all about the R behind his name. Bushbots have a hard time seeing the truth. True conservatives understand their is something more than R or D - its about preserving the freedoms that many have died to keep. Something apparantly lost by you.
