Shirley was considered a man's name until that little curly-haired girl came along.

And Ashley was a man's name at one time also. I always liked it for a man. But couldn't use it for my son because it has been co-opted to a girl's only name now.

Many traditional MALE names, have, through the years, been co-opted for female names. Marion and Frances/Francis and Brook/e, for example. And then, there are the female Michaels, which REALLY is peculiar; IMO.

There's a man named Ashley in Gone with the Wind...played in the movie version by a man whose first name was Leslie (if I rmember correctly).
