Chicago is already home to the tallest building in the United States. Now, the city is reaching new heights.
CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine looks at how a new project will make its mark on the citys skyline.
Youll have to crane your neck quite a bit to see 2,000 feet up. Thats how tall the citys newest skyscraper will be.
The Fordham Spire would be built at 420 E. North Water Street in Chicagos Streeterville neighborhood, looking downriver toward the Loop. The project is a residential and hotel tower. But the question remains as to whether it will become reality or just the latest fantasy of developers with big dreams, but not deep pockets.
Maybe its the beauty of the design that twists and turns nearly half a mile into the sky.
Or maybe its the genius of the architect, Santiago Calatrava, whose marriage of art and architecture. A combination of the two at the new Milwaukee art museum has made him a rising international star.

Looks like a drill bit, if you ask me, but I thinks she's a beauty!
THINK she's a beauty
Something new for Al-Queda to take down.
Wouldn't it accomplish the same thing and be a whole lot cheaper to just build a multi-story penthouse on top of the Sears Tower?
Wonder what Sigmund Frued would say? LOL. Intresting design though.
When people are screwed by the Chicago government, they'll have a new symbol for their plight...
Should have put a right hand spiral on it, us old toolmakers hate left handed spirals, we keep forgetting to turn the machine on backwards and screw them up too often...
Wow. You could see that thing from Michigan.
Take off your burqa, dear.
Your fellow Americans will protect your right to be a cowering, cowardly fool.
And protect American entrepreneurs so that they may create and reach for the sky.
'Da Mare' (the Mayor - Daley) will protect us. ;-)
Word on the street is that pre-sales contracts are going well.
Chicago is no. 2 after Hong Kong. It is going to add the Trump Tower and now this one. Truly a world class city.
(looks like a drill bit)
Umm, then it's the perfect imagery for Dailey's Chicago?
(PS, this race to put the tallest non-functional spires on buildings solely for bragging rights is getting a bit old.)
(PPS That building, minus the spire even, is easily 50% taller than any other buildings in the skyline... Where's the Sears tower.)
(PPPS Incidentally, the Sears Tower is STILL the tallest functional building in the world. Petronas simply has a hige decorative spire. For some reason, they count decorative spires as part of the building height when they claim falles building, but not functional masts, like antennae. Sear's antennae, I believe, are STILL higher than Petronas' spires... Of course, as I write this, I don't know the status of the megascraper the arabs were building...)
(PPPPS Does anyone hear a leak?)
Looks more like a spiral drill collar.
Sigmund would most likely think the architect has issues.
There's another (quite similar) building in Sweden going up now that's called "Turning Torso".

Who is going to want to pay premium rents to be located there? It will strain the infrastructure. There isn't any economic reason for building that high.
Make that a drill bit with a left-handed twist. You would have to run your drill motor in REVERSE for the bit to work.
"When people are screwed by the Chicago government, they'll have a new symbol for their plight..."
And only 3.2 miles from Meigs Field.
WHEN people are screwed?
You should see our property tax bills.
LOL, good point.
