US to test 700-tonne explosive(will send mushroom cloud over Las Vegas)

The US military plans to detonate a 700 tonne explosive charge in a test called "Divine Strake" that will send a mushroom cloud over Las Vegas, a senior defense official said.

"I don't want to sound glib here but it is the first time in Nevada that you'll see a mushroom cloud over Las Vegas since we stopped testing nuclear weapons," said James Tegnelia, head of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency.

Tegnelia said the test was part of a US effort to develop weapons capable of destroying deeply buried bunkers housing nuclear, chemical or biological weapons.

"We have several very large penetrators we're developing," he told defense reporters.

Any chance of shifting the drop to Hyannisport?

"I'm hoping there's going to be some video of it."

They are probably counting on it - so it is also 'visible in Tehran'.

No! Where can I get one?

I collect odd ones. Among the beanies I have an aardvark, crab, a bat, and a lobster.

Not 140,000 pounds. 1,440,000 pounds. One metric tonne is 2,200 pounds. Times 700.

I have relatives in Vegas. Some I haven't seen in decades, thankfully.........

Count your blessings. I HAD relatives in Vegas, they moved here.

Actually my parents, 83 & 86, retired there in the 80s. Got tired of the fast life and relocated to here in NC about 2 years ago. It's been a challenge getting them settled and weaning them off of free buffets and daily bingo.

I found it through Google. I had seen it before but couldn't remember where so I had to search for it.

I don't know where to get one...I'm checking with freecycle today, as a gal has about 20 BB's to give away. If I'm the lucky person to get them, I'll let you know.

My sister gave me a red-eyed tree frog because I collect frogs, but since I've been in AZ, I haven't unpacked any of them. No room!

load up an old B-52 with explosives, install remote control, and fly it into Iranian bunker complexes......

That's a definite possibility. There are tons of worn out 747, DC-10, L1011, and C-141 airframes that could be converted into flying bombs. The Space Shuttle is carried on top of a modified 747- how much does the Shuttle weigh?

It still wouldn't be as powerful as a nuke though and would be very vulnerable to Iranian air defenses: big and slow.

Good, Vegas needs to be reminded they are in fallout land.

The sign in front of the Stardust reminds them of that.

ANFO is just a fuel oil and ammonium nitrate mix.

Holy CRAP! That's a lotta fertilizer!

Thanks, I knew I misplaced a zero somewhere around here.

PS: However, we were both off. 2,200 lbs. x 700 is 1,540,000 pounds. Anyway you look at it this test doesn't have anything to do with checking what a conventional device would do.

"Any chance of shifting the drop to Hyannisport?"

Dropping Senator Kennedy out of an airplane would violate the Hague Conventions as a cruel weapon.

That statement freaked me out - you couldn't really see mushroom clouds from Vegas when they were testing nukes in the past could you?

Nukes aren't as dangerous as the whiney liberals would like you to believe. More than 3000 of them were exploded very close to Las Vegas. The liberals would have you believe that the whole area would be uninhabitable for hundreds of years. Right.

Go and tell that to the residents of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Nukes are the answer for the Iran question.

The Iranian leadership is insane. They will welcome the news, as it will bolster their efforts to prepare for the apocalypse.

If we're gonna use something that powerful, why not use a danged nuke in the first place?

First off, it's only in the class of tactical nuke. Plus, no fallout or radiation.

Wow, I bet that involved documenting a lot of lies about Yucca and the technologies involved, from the protest groups.
