"Same goes for the B-1..... "
I was out near Nellis recently and saw (heard) one of those B1-B's..WOW..... kinda hard to sneak up on someone with one of those.... I could hear it long before I saw it.
I was laughing inside thinking how the sound of that must make the hairs stand up on the back of our enemies necks. They KNOW that shortly there after, they're gonna be in a world of hurt.
;)
I understand that the Iraqi desert was littered with sound systems that made noises like approaching helicopters and MI-1A Abrams...
I am always amused by the image of the guy at the enemy radar site...
"Sir we have a contact! No... wait... Its gone now."
"Oh $&*@%!"
That means that it wasn't going real fast. It's capable of Mach 0.9 or so at sea level. Meaning that the aircraft is only slightly slower than the sound waves coming from it. If it was 5 miles off, and headed right towards you at Mach 0.9, the sound from 5 miles away would arrive less than 3 seconds before the aircraft.
