I think he got up and pitched to another batter, went down again, then they finally figured out it was serious!

Exactly.

I can still remember hearing the crowd groan when he went down that second time. Of course he came back to be the World Series MVP that year, and in 1968 the Cy Young award winner in a historic season so remarkably dominant that the pitching mound had to be lowered the next year.
