The law that made all people born here American citizens made sense when people crossed an ocean and made a commitment to become Americans.

Sowell is on to something here. The problem with Mexicans(and other Central and South American countries) is that they never really assimilate if they are constantly reinforcing their flawed culture and ideas. There are currently illegal aliens here in the U.S. that have been here over 20 years and still cannot speak or read English.

He's onto a lot of somethings. Unneeded surplus crops, free water to farmers paid for by taxpayers, and "illegal aliens" subsidized by taxpayers.

Yes, Sowell is on to something here, it's the very first provision in section one of the 14th Amendment: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."

The only way around this aspect is through the amendment process...and I don't see this one changing anytime soon.
