Republicans for Environmental Protection has endorsed former Rep. Pete McCloskey (R-Calif.) for the GOP nomination in Californias 11th Congressional District instead of the Republican incumbent, Rep. Richard Pombo.
In a statement, the organization endorsed McCloskey, co-author of the 1973 Endangered Species Act, because he has a distinguished record of working to safeguard the environment and supporting traditional Republican values.
The organization did not support Pombo, who, according to the organization, has worked to dismantle landmark environmental laws.
McCloskey served in Congress from December 1967 until January 1983 and unsuccessfully ran for the Republican nomination for president in 1972. He broke ranks to support Democratic Sen. John Kerry for president in 2004.
Retired businessman Tom Benigno is also challenging Pombo in the Republican primary. Democrats Steve Filson and Jerry McNerney are battling to face the winner of the Republican primary.

McCloskey = RINO moron.
Pombo is a great congressman. And this is a conservative district. Don't think we need any more environmental laws to hinder our food production here in the San Joaquin Valley.
"Traditional Republican Values ?" A rabid anti-Semite, anti-Zionist, anti-Defense, pro-John F'ing Kerry, anti-American, hard-core Socialist kook is a man who represents "Traditional Republican Values ?" Naah, McCloskey is what we call a "Traditional 'RAT." Senile Commie Scum running in the WRONG party. Adios to this trash.
McCloskey has always been one of the PLO's biggest cheerleaders, and greatest enemies of Israel in the US, going back to his days in Congress when he was, in my opinion, on the PLO payroll. He couldn't possibly be a Rebublican...except in California. We don't need another doddering old doofus pushing 80, flashing his war medals from Korea posing as an expert on war, while letting Pelosi lead him around by his...nose. That's why there's Murtha.
McCloskey? The same former Marine who won the Navy Cross as a pilot in Korea?
I thought that creep McCloskey was dead.
we continue to support Richard Pombo...
Same guy, who later threw America and the GOP under the bus on many votes, especially against Israel. See post #6.

As the California party spreads it tent in a self perceived necessity to remain politically significant that definition is harder to state with certainty.
Today, probably the most viable definition of California Republicanism is an ideology which publicly recognizes that the US, but not the State of California, has a constitution. Beyond that broad classification, the California Republican Party is developing three, distinct species; liberal, moderate and conservatives. Supporting the three main species are a vast variety of organized subspecies, based on everything from culture, to religion to pet peeves, which are bewildering in complexity and a nightmare for a political strategists, come an election cycle.
One logical conclusion is that party has taken on a hydra like personality to eliminate the need for a loyal opposition. A sound survival strategy but contrary to the basic purposes of organized political parties.
I like the way it used to be. Ideologies were reasonably rigid, traditions were exalted and choices were clear. Party leaders were generally successful in convincing the faithful to support weaker candidates and a sense of cohesion permeated the ranks.
I am sure that rant felt good. I kind of like McCloskey myself. Pombo might lose in the general. I rate this district somewhere on the cusp between lean and likely GOP.
No, the rant didn't particularly feel good. What exactly do you like about this cretin ? I mean, he's not a Republican. These types of haters are found in the Cynthia McKinney wing of the 'Rats.
Can you imagine for a moment if this cretin somehow defeated Pombo in the primary ? The media would then spend the rest of the year reminding the voters of his hateful anti-Israel views.
McCloskey had those views, when Begin wanted to incorporate the West Bank. Thank heavens Israel didn't. If it had, the nation, would be in deep, deep demographic trouble. I liked McCloskey for his socially liberal views, and candor. He just said what he thought. I admire that. Granted he is a geezer now. It is sad how folks I remember as relatively young and vital, are now dying like flies. I hate when that happens.
