WASHINGTON, March 27 With Republicans deeply divided, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted on Monday to legalize the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants and ultimately to grant them citizenship, provided that they hold jobs, pass criminal background checks, learn English and pay fines and back taxes.
Only 4 of the 10 Republicans on the committee supported the bill. They were the committee chairman, Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, and Senators Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Mike DeWine of Ohio and Sam Brownback of Kansas. All eight Democrats on the committee voted in favor of the legislation.
The rift among Republicans on the committee reflects the deep divisions in the party...

So help you God, indeed.
Pfffft!
I see the names of four sellouts who should be handed their walking papers next election.
Let them take a "job that Americans don't want to do".
I absolutely agree with you that illegal immigration must be controlled, and I am firmly opposed to any type of amnesty. Amnesty sends the wrong message - that of a reward - to those who are and have been evading our laws. It is also unfair to all of the legal immigrants who came to this nation and followed our laws to become citizens.
Rest assured that one of my top priorities in the Senate will be to curtail illegal immigration and increase our border security. Failed border security was one of many reasons cited by the 9/11 Commission for the events that happened that tragic day, and we have to take steps to strengthen our national security, abroad and within our borders.
In the past I have supported and voted for increased border patrol units and technology, a better tracking system for entry, tougher visa requirements for foreign nationals seeking entrance, and stricter student visa requirements for those who want to study from abroad. I look forward to working with my Senate colleagues to enact further fundamental immigration reforms.
Now, I know it's a 'cut and paste' reply, but at least I got a reply within a day of sending, and in my opinion, tells me that this is a good man.
I hope I'm not proven wrong.
4 reasons not to be a Republican. I can think of others too. Snow. Collins. Chaffee.
"Provided that they hold jobs, pass criminal background checks, learn English and pay fines and back taxes." That's what they said during the 1986 "reform," the 1990 "reform" and the 1996 "reform."
Betrayed by members of our own Party. Let's remember this in November.
We'll have to see what the final bill looks like. I'm sure it will make everyone feel "warm" and "fuzzy" and completely ignore the will of the American Citizenry.
I'm confident that Mississippi Senators Thad Cochran and Trent Lott will come out strong against amnesty as well.
Lott gets called a "RINO" by some on this board, but issues like this one show who the true RINOs are.
"We will not accept enforcement-only approaches," said Cecilia Munoz, vice president of the National Council of La Raza, a Hispanic advocacy group.

Are the RINOs from the Northeast like Snowe and Collins on the side of Kennedy on this issue? They have almost no hispanic voters to cater to in their home states, and I'm sure Maine residents are against amnesty.
The French are protesting because they don`t want to work.
The Mexicans are protesting because they want to work
That, and many (most?) legal, naturalized immigrants are just as opposed to illegals as we natives are!
Stand for the rule of law, for once, would ya?
President Bush kept Spector from losing in the primary. It's the gift that keeps on giving.
And when they refuse to speak English and cry poor mouth about paying the fines and taxes? DIFI said they already payed their taxes.
Cant anyone on the hill see the huge cost of now granting them Social Security, the HealthCare costs and the many other factors involved in granting them amnesty?
But now nobody cares a sh!t since its the poor damm TAXPAYERS are going to foot the bill eventually!!!
But actually its a very clever ploy by the Demon-Rats since if the Republicans still hold a hardline against amnesty & citizenships for the ILLEGALS then it drives the Hispanics more firmly into the hands of the Demon-RATS and if the Republicans are PRO Amnesty then it further weakens the President's hand.
Its just a matter for the Demonrats that they can either Win Little or Win BIG
I still wonder what evil spell FOX has over Bush why he has allowed the MILLIONS to so blatently break the immigration laws...
Nothing will be done.
Why is it that every discussion about illegal immigration has to first focus on what to do about the huge number of illegals already here? This is not the first thing to deal with. First plug the hole, (I was thinking -- wall), then bail out the boat.
