Study up:
"Medium" is the singular, "media" is the plural.

Thanks, all. You are all correct. Media is a plural word.
Reference: The Associated Press Stylebook
"In the sense of mass communication, ... the word is plural."
Then, an example: "The news media are..."
Interestingly, I have a 1974 Merriam-Webster Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary and, under media, there are no references the communications industry, only a note to see "medium."
Way down in the different "medium" definitions, it says "pl usu media, a channel of communications."
Apparently, we didn't use this word then to describe this profession. I don't know if McLuhan got this going (the medium is the message) or someone else.
