"SHAMEFUL" is the word that Mexican President Vicente Fox has used, seemingly without irony, to describe American proposals to build a fence along the two nations' massive border. One might argue that the term is a better description of the corrupt, opportunity-stifling government Fox oversees, or that "ineffective" would be a better characterization of the border-wall idea. After all, it's Fox's country and its policies that compel millions of Mexicans to risk their lives fleeing north a force that no American barrier could ever thwart.
True solutions to the immigration problem are neither within our borders nor under our exclusive control. It is time to refocus the debate where it belongs on making the leadership of Mexico accountable for Mexico's under-performing economy.
If Mexico were able to attain the growth rate of China, not only could you stop the immigration north, you could even reverse it, as happened briefly shortly after the signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement in 1994. Economic stagnation in Mexico creates the momentum that drives the population to look for better opportunities elsewhere.

mexico has more billionaires per capita then any nation as I recall. their political class, their elites, their economic system - are wholly corrupt.
Is he talking about lining Fox corrupt his corrupt government up against an adobe wall with a blindfold and a final cigarette? If so, then I agree that they should be held accountable. That is a fine Mexican tradition that has fallen into disuse.
oh my
What's the big deal if we build a fence? It won't harm Mexico in any way, right Vicente? I mean, the folks coming across are borders aren't people that you would rather be rid of, right?
Tough FS!! I could care less what you think.
No? You mean they merely use whatever "principles" that come their way?
I'd be inclined to nation build in Mexico next, since that seems to be what we do. Not until after the wall/border security is accomplished, though.
I agree. The solution's in Mexico.
Let's say, for the sake of discussion, that this is true.
In that case, he needs to explain why they can't find jobs in their own country.
The answer, obviously, is that Mexico is a Narco-kleptocracy, but it would be nice to see the question posed once to El Presidente.
well Fox will be history this year...one term down there
and don't forget the oil wealth.
You know, it occurs to me that so many of the developed countries around the world are having immigration problems in some form or the other, mostly because these third-world toilets are either corrupt, oppressive or both. People just want to get away from there.
People just want to work and have some kind of a normal life. I don't take that away from them. No, we developed countries don't owe them a living, but if they follow the rules and immigrate legally, it makes it much easier for us to swallow. It's these illegals who think this country exists to accomodate their needs, for free, whenever they want, that changes the scenario.
Any solution without significant mandatory jail time will be no solution at all.
The title of this thread is eerily similar to the logic used for the passage of NAFTA: that once Mexico's economy was fairly bolstered by American investment, the problem of illegal immigration would disappear.
All them Mexicans who come here for a "better life" or a "a job" would stay at home to take all the new jobs (formerly held by Americans) created by the relocation of plants and manufacturing facilities across the border, according to this logic.
Well, they haven't. Which leads to the question; what, besides work, is drawing all these Mexicans to America? Answer; the WELFARE STATE.
So, either the proponents of NAFTA, etc got it wrong, that Mexicans come here for jobs alone, or NAFTA was yet another boondoggle by American business to avoid paying benefits and decent wages to American workers (in effect, reinstituting slavery, but a version much more palatable and PR-friendly).
Stop the extension of benefits to non-citizens in everything from bi-lingual education to free admission to the emergency room, to the citizen-status of children born to illegals in US hospitals, and watch the problem disappear. It will force Mexicans to create their own version of the US inside their own borders, if human nature is any guide to predicting people's actions.
Tom Delay for president.
"To Solve America's Immigration Problems, Solve Mexico's Domestic Problems"
Au contraire, Mr. Mundell. We are under NO obligation to solve another country's problems. It is up to the citizens of that country to do so. Just as we are attempting to, wake the sleeping giants in Washington. You, Mr. Mundell, have lost your mind, just as many other newspaper people have...
