OF COURSE, America needs immigrants. This is a country founded by immigrants and made richer by the imprint of newcomers in search of a land that rewards their hard work and determination to make a better life for their families.
The problem is that no country -- certainly, no country with a social safety net -- can afford to accommodate everyone who wants in. (Or as Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Huntington Beach, put it, "We can't be the HMO to the world.") That's why there are immigration policies that limit the number of people who can immigrate here legally.
The lack of an open-door policy has spawned this week's victim class, illegal or "undocumented" immigrants, who have flouted American law and apparently believe they should not have to pay the consequences of that choice. Hence Sunday's huge demonstration in Los Angeles, where activists carried signs that called for "Amnistía, Full Rights for All Immigrants."
The Los Angeles Times duly reported, "Some Republicans fear that pushing too hard against illegal immigrants could backfire nationally, as with Proposition 187 (the 1994 ballot measure that sought to deny benefits for illegal immigrants, that) helped spur record numbers of California Latinos to become U.S. citizens and register to vote. Those voters subsequently helped Democrats regain political control in the state."
Call that the Backlash Myth. In fact, Prop. 187 passed with 59 percent of the vote and GOP Gov. Pete Wilson, who championed the measure, was re-elected in 1994. In 2003, when Democratic Gov. Gray Davis signed a bill that would allow illegal immigrants to get drivers' licenses, he so enraged voters that he sealed his political demise. After Davis was recalled from office, the heavily Democratic California Legislature repealed the bill.

I called my Senators' offices and game them an earful (Elizabeth Dole & Richard Burr). I suggest you call yours also and tell them to stop the invasion.
I'm sure that Lower Jersey will benefit greatly, though, when you do decide to move out that way! Until then, please do
Stay safe,

It is interesting isn´t it. For years the man and womean in the street has become much more outspoken about the illegal immigrant problem and now it has come to a head. The other side puts a half a million demonstrators in the streets and the politicians say look at all those votes on the hoof out there. Our side will never put half a million people in the street.
The only power we have as citizens is with the vote. We should vote out every politician that is for this law. Voye in a new third party and take the power away from the two major parties. The way these politicians are going in the next few years the power of the vote won´t mean a damn thing either.
You've completely misread the article.
The author was on your side. She was talking about an alleged backlash by angry migrants against Republicans who support calls for more control on immigration. The theory is that anyone who supports tougher immigration laws will feel a political backlash and get hammered on election day. And it was that backlash she believes is a myth.
Her point, if you read the whole article, is that a strong majority of this country supports tougher immigration laws. And that if there is any backlash at all from the demonstrations, it is most likely going to be against the immigrants themselves.

Boy, I turn my back for a couple of hours, and look what happens.
: )
I think we're all in agreement here. Re-Read the entire article and I think you'll find that Debra Saunders is spot-on with her analysis.
LegacyMedia is making these protests seem like there will be a backlash against people who want to protect our borders. After all, they claim that there was a backlash against Pete Wilson -- but there wasn't. There was just a lot of noise from the open-border crowd, and he got reelected.
Debra clearly understands the difference between legal and illegal immigration, but like many of us, is afraid that yesterday's Senate action tries to erase the difference. She's against amnesty and open borders.
Any backlash will be from those of us who don't want the illegal invasion. I'm also convinced that the noise in the street this weekend is only serving to remind voting AMERICANS that we DON'T want open borders.
What we are watching now is the destruction of the GOP by a RAT inspired split. Hysterical overreaction seems to be the order of the day for the "conservatives" as they ONCE AGAIN threaten the president and the party while the Party of Treason and the Treason Media laugh up their sleeves once again at how easy it is to fool "conservative".
Threats to cut off their noses to spite their faces resound throughout FR as it continues to slide into irrelevance giving the Left its greatest victory. FR has been the greatest enemy the Left has seen the last half dozen yrs but has been Schiavoized into an enemy of the GOP.

Somebody in the LAPD or Sheriff's dept. must have made the decision on their own. I'm sure that Tony the Thug will be calling them any second now to try and pull them back.
The Illegals would "backlash"? Who effing cares? Let 'em backlash all they want. It'll just make them easier to ID and deport.
RAT inspired? You mean RINO inspired don't you?
I am turning in my republican card. I will no longer vote for those spineless bloviators in congress. They are anti-American. This is the last straw. I'm done!
-----
Yes, me too. I have had it with the entire Congress. They do not care about America -- ONLY VOTES! And the entire illegal issue is nothing but PANDERING for the Mexican vote. As a force for America, the Congress is totally dysfunctional.
No backlash? Wanna bet?""
I'm with you. Lock and Load.
Nope the fifth column loves to try and destroy the GOP and the President by attacking them from the Right. This worked wonderfully for the Party of Treason with the Ports deal and is now working through the Illegals.
Now how stupid does one have to be to believe that ANY problem will be better addressed by giving the Party of Treason MORE power by weakening the GOP?
I don't have much hope for our future either. I'm glad I had no children.
It this man delusional? (yes he is)
OF COURSE THIS WILL CREATE A BACKLASH!!!
Just as the amnesty debacle of Reagan cost him.
This BS about paying a fine is not amnesty is pure doublespeak. 1000 dollars for GUARANTEED US citizenship! You will have people sellling a kidney to do that.
