With a single-spaced, six-page letter touting his accomplishments, Sharpe James announced yesterday he will not seek a sixth term as Newark's mayor, ending one of the most remarkable reigns in New Jersey political history.
Citing only his opposition to dual office holding, James, who is also a state senator, wrote he did not want to be a candidate in the May 9 mayoral election and asked the city clerk to remove his name from the ballot.

Was that the documentary on the booker-james throwdown? that was pretty amazing stuff. sharpe james getting out of politics is good news for Newark.

Technically he is still in politics as a state senator- apparently he could be mayor and a state senator at the same time?!
"Street Fight" was the documentary about the 2002 Newark mayoral election. Mostly a one sided view as Sharpe refused to grant access to the filmmaker. It was nominated for an Academy Award - documentary.
Yes, it is possible to concurrently hold office at the state and municipal level. In other states, such a state of affairs is a crime.
