March 28, 2006 -- HAVING crossed another false crescendo, the crisis over Iran's nuclear ambitions seems to be calming down somewhat. The U.N. Security Council has danced its way away from the issue - at least for the time being. And the United States, having subcontracted its Iran policy to the European Union trio, shows no sign of wanting to keep the issue under the limelight.

Can we please start dropping bombs on the nuke facilities already?
Aside - I can only conclude that we must have poor intel on Iran or we would have done it already.
I think the US is hoping Israel will do the job like they did in Iraq.
Plus stalling until they can get a few more troops out of Iraq and ready for operations toward Iran.
This is an important editorial way beyond the nuclear issue.
"there is speculation that the majority that backed the incumbent, Ali Khamenei, may be on the way out. If that happens, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad would be able to control the assembly and promote his spiritual guru, Ayatollah Muhammad-Taqi Mesbah-Yazdi, as the new "Supreme Leader."
I can't imagine that this would be allowed to happen without a fight. There may be a big shake-up coming very soon in the IRI gov't.
Can't they find somebody with a longer more unpronouncable name? (And then have a jihad because we can't pronounce it.)
Some refer to him as Mezba-Yazdi, others as just Yazdi.
Either way, he's a very dangerous guy to have in charge of the Assembly of Experts. Yes, things can actually get worse than they are now.

On a Sunday trip to the BX, I picked up a copy of Ralph Peters' book, New Glory: Expanding America's Global Supremacy We might wish Peters' enjoyed some influence among decision makers.
The purpose of this book is to advance the debate over American strategy. Based upon the experience of a military career and exposure to sixty countries on six continents, its themes attempt to break free not only of eurocentric folly restraining us today, but of the self-limiting divisions within our own society. . . . Whether we wish it or not, we lead humanity. At times, we will have to lead with bayonets, but, more often, we will lead through our ideas. If we remain wise and just, as well as resolute, ever more of our fellow human beings will follow willingly.
I've read no further than the introduction, thus far. But, I think I might anticipate that it is our self-limiting societal divisions which force us to keep on pursuing the European diplomatic Model-T.
