Schwarzenegger starts early with TV reelection ads

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger does not face reelection for eight months, but on Monday the former Hollywood superstar began television advertising to bolster his lagging public support.

Elected in 2003 in the first recall election in California's history, Schwarzenegger does not face any significant opposition in the June Republican primary in his effort to stay at the helm of America's most populous state.

"This is part of our efforts to highlight what has happened over the last two years," Matthew Dowd, the campaign's chief strategist, told a media conference call. "This is sort of the start of that dialogue."

The Republican former Mr. Olympia has made massive spending on infrastructure the centerpiece of his reelection effort, but he failed earlier this month to get the legislature to put a massive bond proposal on the June ballot.

Schwarzenegger's two leading Democratic opponents, state Treasurer Phil Angelides and state Controller Steve Westly, have begun flooding the airwaves in recent weeks as they prepare to face off in the June primary.

Westly, a former eBay executive and multimillionaire who is using his wealth to help fund his bid, has already spent $6.95 million on television advertising, campaign manager Jude Barry told Reuters. In some markets such as San Francisco, the spots have been heavily broadcast on local channels.

"Our strategy right now is not influenced by what Westly and Angelides are doing," Dowd said when asked if heavy Democratic advertising had prompted a response.

Angelides, who has won the endorsement of some of California's leading Democrats, also started his television ad campaign last month, but lacks pockets as deep as Westly's.

The latest campaign reports show Westly had $23 million on hand compared to Angelides's $14.5 million.

You can watch the ad at Arnold's campaign website at:

JoinArnold.com

I think it's a good ad and glad to see he is starting early.

You can also go to the US Chamber of Commerce's "Turning CA around" website to read why they are supporting Arnold and watch their ads.

And for those who may have missed it:

CA: McClintock, Gov. Teaming Up for Better or Worse

The 2006 political season may be creating some California history: a governor and lieutenant governor candidate running for election as a team.

Not just a team in name — the Republican ticket — but in actual operation: coordinated messages, ads and schedules, including joint campaigning in conservative areas.

Since when did McClintock become a liberal?

Or did you miss that he forged a team with Arnold?

The name McClintock now lacks the magic it used to.

Once a hero to the conservative masses. Now a sacrificial lamb at the throne of pragmatic liberalism. A fallen hero, succumbed to the pressure of campaign finance.

I wish Senator McClintock well but I suspect he has suffered more than a few restless nights after he took the cash in return for support of a European liberal.

I bet when your car tire goes flat, you let the air out of the other three.
That is the reasoning you have with this election.
Your choice is Arnold or the Democrat.

My choice is simply. A conservative. If not a conservative, the closest thing I can find to one.

There is no party loyalty. Party registration is simply a matter of convenience during partisan primaries. I have been a lifelong, registered Republican because that party traditionally sponsored conservatives and, for the most part, they are still upholding that tradition today. It is sad to see the CRP break from that honorable tradition at the top of their statewide slate.

Perhaps it is time that the CRP suffers a substantial loss in their wayward journey. The retrospective will hopefully give them time to analyze their profound and needless mistake. Time to regroup and return to a higher road. A road less well traveled but a road with substantial reward to the citizens of California.

It is discomforting to speculate that when the failed experiment is over, the electorate may have throw out the baby with the bath water. There are more than a few honest conservatives down ticket. I would hate to see them sacrificed on the alter of unreasoned expediency.

CA Democrat Voters 7.1 million
CA Republican Voters 5.7 million

And the Third Party candidate wins how?
Punishing the Republican Party will punish all Californians
including you and your family.

welcome banner for Angelides

Instead of constantly promoting him, why don't you register D or no party to vote for one of his opponents? Schwarzenegger has a lock on the GOP nomination, anyway, so he doesn't need your vote in June.

I am not the one, promoting Angelides. You should address your post to those who want to see Arnold defeated. So guess who becomes governor then?

Those pesky little facts.

A review of our archives indicates that the FairOpinion subscription is about the only subscription bringing up the name of the Democrat candidate, again and again and again.

A classic approach to increase name recognition. I'm sure the candidate is thankful. I'm equally sure that the CRP did not intend this when they launched their campaign on this forum topic.

I'd suggest checking with headquarters before the ploy becomes so effective it can't be undone.

I bet when someone is peeing on your leg, you're convinced it's just raining. That's the reasoning behind blindly voting for party endorsements. The choice between Arnold or the Democrat is becoming increasingly a difference without a distinction.

Take for example his latest non-stand stand on the 500,000 person pro-criminal rally.

Umm, someone who infringes on gun rights, signs away lands to environazis, increases our debt by billions for pork spending, spends highway funds on other things while asking for bonds for more infrastructure spending, and abrogates any responsibility for dealing with illegal immigration in California (our #1, root base problem)?

Oh, wait! That's who we have now.

I bet when your car has four good tires, you let the air out of at least one.

Conservatives held their noses and supported Pete Wilson. By contrast, when a conservative candidate in Bill Simon won the primary, the "Republican moderates" stabbed him in the back.

Never again.

False. You are promoting his candidacy on many FR threads about this year's gubernatorial election campaign, and that is why I addressed you.

You should address your post to those who want to see Arnold defeated. So guess who becomes governor then?

Please review your own posts if you don't remember, but I addressed you, FairOpinion, specifically because you are the poster promoting Angelides, his viability, and his name more than any other poster I have noticed.

I repeat my suggestion: register "no party" and vote for an opponent of Angelides to defeat him in the primary. Your June vote will be about twice its November value, because fewer people vote in the Democrat primary ballots than vote the general election ballots, and more people will support the D nominee in November than will vote for him in June.
