Senate Panel Approves Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.

After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the gounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.

The panel's vote cleared the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday on the emotional immigration issue.

"All Americans wanted fairness and they got it this evening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the Massachusetts Democrat who played a pivotal role in drafting the legislation, approved 12-6.

Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voted for the bill but signaled that some of the provisions could well be changed by the full Senate.

In general, the bill is designed to strengtehn border patrol, create new opportunities for so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

At several critical popints, committee Democrats were united while Republicans splintered. In general, GOP Sens. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Mike DeWine of Ohio, who is seeking re-election this fall, sided with Democrats.

That gave Democrats a majority that allowed them to shape the bill to their liking.

Funny, the Mexicans got 500,000 together to do something. FR gets what, 30 at a good Freep?

The anti-war protests in 2003 and 2004 were huge as well and Bush still got re-elected. Freepers are busy working and raising families.

We will need to pay them back come November.

The dems voted as a block for this, but you don't seem interested in beating them. Seems like the cowardly remark of a loser who is afraid of a difficult task.

I would have used tomato paste in my spaghetti sauce, but I didn't have any on hand, so I went with the old standby, which was ketchup. (2 cups actually) :) Added to the 1 pound crumbled beef hamburger (homegrown butchered beef), along with diced red tomatoes, diced onions, and garlic.

Money doesn't influence my vote. Political ads don't either.

Me either

I have a quote and a link saved someplace. It's a quote of Jorge Bush as he's standing with Vicente Fox. It's right before a press conference. He was doing a microphone test.

You can hear him say, I've outlawed the United States. Sovereignty ends in 5 minutes.

That is, of course, a bald-faced lie.

LOL --- know what? Swapping recipes is alot more fun than reading posts from people who want to stay home, vote third party, complain and lecture the rest of us who have not foamed at the mouth over the judicaiary committee's vote.

Where are they now? Where are all the border state rallies? Where are the Tancredo fans? What we did then doesn't matter now. Gore does not equal immigration. If I was there, I'd be in the thick of it. All I see is keyboard commandos and their rhetoric. Typing isn't going to do anything.

That night I made spaghetti was the most fun 2 hours I spent in the kitchen. It was all experimenting and "season to taste" kind of cooking. :)

It's not clear why you are posting in this thread if you have nothing to add beyond "i'm a bushbot and proud of it".

If everyone is overreacting then please share with us what we are missing. Enlighten us, please.

I should have figured...if they can reach this far, to an otherwise sleepy, generally conservative area, then it seems we all have reason for concern.

The honest truth is that conservatives are never going to be strong ralliers. It's easy to get tons of people to rally when they don't have jobs or are students.

Rallies would help a bit, but politicians really only understand votes. Replacing the bad GOP senators with good ones is the only way to break this cycle. We should also focus on unseating democrats where it is feasible.
