Senate Panel Approves Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.

After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the gounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.

The panel's vote cleared the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday on the emotional immigration issue.

"All Americans wanted fairness and they got it this evening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the Massachusetts Democrat who played a pivotal role in drafting the legislation, approved 12-6.

Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voted for the bill but signaled that some of the provisions could well be changed by the full Senate.

In general, the bill is designed to strengtehn border patrol, create new opportunities for so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

At several critical popints, committee Democrats were united while Republicans splintered. In general, GOP Sens. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Mike DeWine of Ohio, who is seeking re-election this fall, sided with Democrats.

That gave Democrats a majority that allowed them to shape the bill to their liking.

Let me guess .. you are a Constitutional (3rd) Party guy?

Nope, very far from that and I have never voted for a third party in my life.

I just don't reward people that lie to me but hey, that's just me.

Funny, the Mexicans got 500,000 together to do something. FR gets what, 30 at a good Freep?

I was thinking the same thing today when I saw thousands demonstrating in my mid-size Michigan city that has a population that is 6% Hispanic. I don't think I have ever seen that large a demonstration here. What comes next from a group so well organized?

Max Baucus' humungous political warchest (to the tune of around $16 million) hasn't persuaded me to vote for him. Conrad Burns' humungous political warchest hasn't persuaded me to vote for him either.

Maybe not you specifically, but advertising does influence undecides - of course hard core party loyalists aren't going to be swayed by advertising.

I can't believe I'm actually having a discussion on a website frequented by adults where some are denying that money has a significant influence on elections.

In politics .. though they may try ... not every politician can deliver on all their promises

I'm not denying it, I'm just speaking for myself only. Money doesn't influence my vote. Political ads don't either.

So, where was the counter protest FR organized? Where was the 'we have over 200,000 registered' posters at your counter rally? Oh, there was no counter rally..... What about all the border Freepers? What? No protests? Gee, I'll post a post. That'll do the trick. We all talk the talk, but NOTHING will happen. Got that, NOTHING. We all can keyboard warrior until the cows come home, it means diddly. The problem is, and it's not my "F'ing high horse", it's the attitude here. Where are the real protests? Where are the local Freepers organizing events to counter the Mexicans? The whining and moaning posts aren't going to solve anything. Get of my high horse, sheesh. Put up or shut up.

I was there when Gore was stealing the election, every rally, every protest, every event in our area. I don't live in Arizona or California or Texas or New Mexico. Where were those folks? Where were the Freepers? So, put up or shut up.

And if you're in the frontlines, why didn't your rally 500,000 counter protesters?

It's not frozen! It's not even an entree'! There is the "mixing of ingredients" involved!

Not a dime's worth of difference! We Americans, myself included, better start making a fuss about the idiotic decisions the politicos are making. I used to vote "against" gimmiecrats, not wanting to cast my lot with the Republicans. Now, I just don't know if I'll ever vote again unless Billary runs.

Then you must not have voted in many elections

I've voted in many for by national, state and local positions. If a Republican is elected and then governs as a democrat then they don't get my vote - the (R) next to their name doesn't mean that they automatically get my vote.

Again, it may be a crazy concept, but republicans that govern as demcrats don't get my vote.
