WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.
After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the gounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.
The panel's vote cleared the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday on the emotional immigration issue.
"All Americans wanted fairness and they got it this evening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the Massachusetts Democrat who played a pivotal role in drafting the legislation, approved 12-6.
Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voted for the bill but signaled that some of the provisions could well be changed by the full Senate.
In general, the bill is designed to strengtehn border patrol, create new opportunities for so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.
At several critical popints, committee Democrats were united while Republicans splintered. In general, GOP Sens. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Mike DeWine of Ohio, who is seeking re-election this fall, sided with Democrats.
That gave Democrats a majority that allowed them to shape the bill to their liking.
9-12-01 --- typo.
I am tired.
Y'all save the Republic for the remainder of this nite.
I've been seening them before I've logged on.
He will certainly stand by what it stands for, bt I think he will substitute the Committee Bill for his, and will justify the substitution in that it (the substitute) also has stern border enforcement.
the soft on crime and national security members of the Senate will gladly filibuster anything that will accomplish more than what we already have now.
President Bush and the Democrats are on the same side of this issue.
Americans lose again.
FOTFLOL! Really love those fish nets. I had a job one time, where I had to wear those... well similar to those --- smaller (tighter?) netting.
Where are you getting this "spite" routine of yours?
If you give a restaurant your business and it let's you down are you acting out of "spite" when you decide not to support it any longer?
By your logic, if you discovered a restaurant was secretly spitting in your food, you would still eat there because the only other restaurant in town didn't hide the fact that they spit in your food.
President Bush's stance on immigration is one large problem I have with this White House administration.
You're right, they'll be in the executive, judicial, and legislative branch of government in the next 3 years. Mark my words. Watch out for 2112. The browning of American continues.
Yes .. but it's not impossible ..
and we'll have a better chance of getting rid of the rino's that way ... instead of the "I'm sitting home and not voting" .. or the "I'm going to vote for a dems to teach y'all a lesson" crowd
As for Specter .. I voted for Tommey and though he lost in the primary .. he did pretty good up against an incumbent like Specter
Me:People vote, not resources.
Individual responsibility is a conservative philosophy. The voters are responsible for their own vote.
Screw that huh?
It's the resources that elected Specter, yeah that's it.
Your comment was dopey. So was your reply.
Guess you agree. whatever.
LOL!!! ... what the hell is that ???
My Senators and Representative aren't "spitting in my food".
I you need that then, sure, whatever.
Of course the part where I said that incumbants were very difficult to defeat in PRIMARIES flew right over your head, right?
The fact that incumbants can be defeated in general elections was my whole point. A republican that is governing as a democrat will almost never be defeated in a primary. The only hope of getting him out of office is for him to be defeated in the general election and then the democrat is defeated in the next election by a true conservative that got the message.
See how that works?
Best wishes for a happy night...lol.
They have completely taken over the home building industry in AZ because of plentiful supply, low wages, and they work completely outside of the law and any lawsuits. They are really feeling their oats now after last Friday's Phoenix march when 20,000 showed up for a protest permit issued for 3,000. Mayor really upset and now they want an apology for the Mayor making remarks that they felt were insulting. Planning another protest for April 10 and they promise 100,000 this time - all walking off their jobs and will not spend a penny on that day. Going to meet in the Chase field (Diamondback park).
Were will this end? Do Americans no longer have any will power? Why wasn't the capital switchboard overwhelmed and their e-mail in-boxes flooded? The average Joe 6-pack doesn't even know what is happening.
Your particular senators and representative may not be, but the Repubican party as whole sure is.
