WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.
After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the gounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.
The panel's vote cleared the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday on the emotional immigration issue.
"All Americans wanted fairness and they got it this evening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the Massachusetts Democrat who played a pivotal role in drafting the legislation, approved 12-6.
Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voted for the bill but signaled that some of the provisions could well be changed by the full Senate.
In general, the bill is designed to strengtehn border patrol, create new opportunities for so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.
At several critical popints, committee Democrats were united while Republicans splintered. In general, GOP Sens. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Mike DeWine of Ohio, who is seeking re-election this fall, sided with Democrats.
That gave Democrats a majority that allowed them to shape the bill to their liking.

Like boozing is a bad thing with the current lot of leaders we have??????????
to fillibuster, its 60 for cloture.
Sixty to pass a bill.
40 to filibuster one.
Do we have 40?
There's NOTHING fair about this. They are pandering to people who do NOT belong here. They won, folks.

It sort of slowed half way through. Jack Bauer is the man!
So, let's kill it with extreme sarcasim. Some of these posters are insane, let's just increase the insanity, to the obsurd. Andrew Jackson was the best president ever!
He most assuredly was not the best. You need only look to recent history to find Jimmy Carter! Is /sarc necessary?
41.
I tried the Jimmy Carter route, went over the heads of the most pigheaded.

whether there are the numbers? .. I don't know
I just know that the senate is in a panic and I'm guessing they are getting slammed by both sides of the issue
He only lived a month after his inauguration.
Do we have 41?
The House would never go along with this version of the bill, anyway.
Typically, the higher educated people are not as brazen to walk over the bordr, squat somewhee, demand rights and welfare, and try to dictate to the host country how to treat them.
I have had a few occasions to deal with Asian people. They are the salt of the earth and probably quitely disgust at this mess since most of them are the most law abiding and self respecting people on the planet.
Did he really say "let the courts enforce their own laws"? If he really did I might vote for him posthumously
That's where you and I differ most. I believe that George Bush is a very intelligent man. One who never makes a move or makes a speech without being fully committed to its message. You sell him short by saying he wants to be all things. No, he doesn't. He has turned against the very people who marched for him and voted for him and defended him - people like me in order to fulfill his life long dream of global trade and governance. In order to do that, he had to swamp this country with Mexicans. He and Vincente Fox have planned every move in order to get Mexico to colonize our land and over power the conservative vote. I have to hand it to him, he is brilliant. Hillary has a tough act to follow.
He was the fat dude? Or was he the pneumonia guy, insisted on speaking in the January rain, longest inauguration speech ever?
I'm not flameing you really.. Its just that you think I'm silly I think you're foolish.. Two silly and foolish guys, eyeballing each other, sword sharpening sword.. thats what we do here.. I say that knowing you the have the onions to admit it when you're wrong..
I really feel critical mass is reached.. America is generally and mostly socialist.. Heroic surgery will be needed if even possible to fix things.... I see Bush as a symptom not the disease.. but attacking the symptom is good today.. The disease, well the disease, will run its course.. The body politic has been weakened too much to handle it..
It must run its course.. the democrat party, the MsM and MsP, academia, hollywood(movies, tv, music), and much much more is simply too much for the pubbie party to handle..
The capitalization of socialism is in progress, you know, like in China and India, coming from the other direction in the U.S.. America is fever ridden.. sick..
God knows I hope I'm wrong.. Been watching this for years and years.. it was a long time coming to this and will be a long time going, if it does.. Unless heroic surgery is performed.. How?.. I don't know..
Unfortunately, conservatives don't yet have the organizational skill to put on a major protest demonstration. We should learn some lessons from the lefties -- they are good at it.
