Senate Panel Approves Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON - The Senate Judiciary Committee approved election-year immigration legislation Monday that clears the way for millions of undocumented workers to seek U.S. citizenship without having to first leave the country.

After days of street demonstrations that stretched from California to the gounds of the U.S. Capitol, the committee also voted to strip out proposed criminal penalties for residents found to be in this country illegally.

The panel's vote cleared the way for the full Senate to begin debate Tuesday on the emotional immigration issue.

"All Americans wanted fairness and they got it this evening," said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the Massachusetts Democrat who played a pivotal role in drafting the legislation, approved 12-6.

Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., voted for the bill but signaled that some of the provisions could well be changed by the full Senate.

In general, the bill is designed to strengtehn border patrol, create new opportunities for so-called guest workers and determine the legal future of the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States illegally.

At several critical popints, committee Democrats were united while Republicans splintered. In general, GOP Sens. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina, Sam Brownback of Kansas and Mike DeWine of Ohio, who is seeking re-election this fall, sided with Democrats.

That gave Democrats a majority that allowed them to shape the bill to their liking.

More on South Carolina--I remember a couple of years back in Hilton Head a member of a Black Leadership group was begging the feds, the state, or the locality to please enforce illegal alien laws because young blacks could not find employment in the hospitality business (restaurants, hotels, gold courses, etc.)

The businesses liked hiring illegals. They were humble, lovable, hardworking and had no rights...

Didn't I read a few days back that Lord Lindsey of Graham thought illegal immigration was great because it kept his favorite golf courses so green and tidy?

I dont recall you questioning my opinion. All I saw in your thread was a personal attack, which is probably why your post was deleted. Now, I've asked you once, and do so again. Dont post to me again.

have confidence that no single man, committee, or demonstration will bring this great country to ruin.

No, America is dying a death by a thousand cuts instead of a single one. The country's infrastructure has been sold off to foreign governments. The country's wage earners are being over come by foreign invaders. The country's property ranchers, farmers, miners, timber men and fishermen have their livelihoods destroyed by treaties with internationalist institutions forcing "sustainable development" restrictions on the used of private property and natural resources so that transnational corporations can exploit cheap labor and lax rules abroad.

No, it isn't 1 man, it is millions of foreign bureaucrats, millions of illegal entrants, corporatists and sellouts who are accomplishing their goal.

Haven't you heard? Brownback wants to destroy the country.

Simply amazing, huh?

Funny thing, I believe that you and I have disagreed on almost every subject for a year or so, yet I don't recall either of us attacking one another personally, do you?

Yet, it seems impossible for some.

Well, Sinkspur, what's your take on the array of votes in the Senate and the earlier horsetrading among "W"'s people, the McCainiacs and Kennedy on this immigration thing?

We've seen this pattern before. President Buchanan let it get out of control.

It's hardly scraping the bottom of the barrel to call the Countryclub Republicans to account, especially when they join in with the Democrats.

CA's Wicked Witches of the West: Pelosi, Feiinstein, Boxer all live in their security towers while here in northern CA our middle-class neighborhoods are turning into barrios - schools peopled by non-English speaking students and administrators who cater to them in the name of tolerance. We have homes being sold - in cash - to a four member family and twelve adult males move in with them. The once quiet neighborhood has 24/7 music, screeching tires, and people just "hanging out" on the sidewalk.

In AZ also - I want to puke every time I see one of "them" pushing their 3 wheeled bicycle ice cream cart in the neighborhood. What is with illegals - haven't they ever heard of a printer or a print shop? Why does everything have to be hand lettered in crayon? It is soooo 3rd world looking. I want my country back NOW. I am sick of America turning into the South America look - it is supposed to be the other way around. Send them all back home and let them protest THEIR GOVERNMENTS. They have no right to protest on America's streets!!!

WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO DO ABOUT IT?

I am going to take Dr. Savage's advice - go out and buy a Mexican flag and burn it tomorrow.

"April 15th is coming up, I owe on my taxes. I only wish American taxpayers would pull a "tea party" on these illegals. I will not pay my taxes for the Senate who are a bunch of rich pansies, add my President along with that. You rich boys have no idea what the "voters" are going through. A Boston tea party is in order,

NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!!!"

Keep your powder dry. I want to see how this plays out, then the call to action may be heard. The DC crowd "THINKS" this will float away. No way, there will be a political price to be extracted.

Sen. Sam "Greenback" doesn't want to destroy America.

He simply wants to please his Agri-Business bosses.

I really wish he would take that Tyson/ADM/Cargill Jet out here to Kansas and look at what has happened.
A quick little jaunt through Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal, Pratt, Hutch, Wichita, Pittsburg...might just open his eyes.

I agree with Sam on many things, and on many issues he has been a great Senator, but on this issue we might as well have Sen. Sebelius or Sen. Glickman.

This used to be called slavery

It still is called slavery. The coyotes sell people into it. I am a Texan, and we do not condone this slavery and prostitution. Please provide the quote from the Senator, and the President that condones slavery. Meantime, thousands enslave themselves to meth, smack, weed, and alcohol out of ignorance. I contend that if one is not part of the solution, then they are contributing to the problem. In all humility to thine perfect position.
