On September 23, 1779, John Paul Jones fought one of the most famous naval engagements in Naval History. Jones struggled with the Royal Navy's 44-gun frigate HMS Serapis, and while his own ship was burning and sinking Jones rejected the British demand for surrender with the immortal words, “I have not yet begun to fight!” About three hours later, HMS Serapis surrendered and Jones assumed command of the ship.
