Tenn. preacher’s wife said to apologize from jail

Mother of 3 who admitted killing husband ‘sorry for everything,’ friend says SELMER, Tenn. - The preacher’s wife charged with murder in the death of her husband wanted his congregation to know “she was sorry for everything she has done,” said a friend who visited her in jail Sunday.

Church member Pam Killingsworth visited Mary Winkler after Sunday services and said the preacher’s wife gave no indication why her husband of 10 years was shot.

“She just said she was sorry and for me to write a note to the church saying that she was sorry for everything she had done,” said Killingsworth as she walked away from the jail in tears.

Winkler, 32, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of her husband, Matthew Winkler, the preacher at the Fourth Street Church of Christ in this small town 80 miles east of Memphis.

Her initial court appearance is scheduled for Monday.

The congregation held its first Sunday services since the shooting death and were warned by elder Robert Shackelford not to speculate about why their popular, young minister was killed.

Friends have described the Winklers as a happy couple with no outward signs of discord, and authorities have refused to talk about a motive for the murder.

“Perhaps over time we will better understand why this has happened,” Shackelford said at an adult Sunday school class. “Be very cautious about what you say or even what you think.”

I'm just dying to know the motive. Sorry, bad choice of words. My bet is still antidepressants, although that seems like an easy enough thing for a report to investigate and report.

If the husband had been beating her or abusing the kids you'd think that that would be her chant...from day #1.

I think the prosecutor will question this friend very closely...and enjoy doing it.

The large majority (perhaps the overwhelming majority) of men who do this to their wives are just plain old scumbags/psychopaths...even the ones who seem to be normal and decent.

Do you think that this woman could be just that kind of individual?

And,for the record,I believe that it could well be that she's something other than a psychopath/scumbag.

"I sure would like to hear why she did it."

There's a pretty strong chance that you'll never find out. If the DA there cuts a plea bargain deal with her, it may never be disclosed.

Watch for a plea bargain for manslaughter, with a very light sentence. If that happens, then daddy was molesting one or more of his children.

I'm betting we never find out why she killed him. We'll just have to guess, based on the plea bargain.

I bet lot`s of people wonder the same thing too.
It sure seems to be about the fastest I`ve heard of anyone being charged with murder 1.
Sad story.The poor kids.

Why?

Why not untreated depression?

well she confessed and it was probably done by the book for a change, read her rights, etc. they don't need a whole lot more if there's no appearance of impropriety. and of course, they recovered the gun and probably have some other evidence from the house.

i think we will find the motive here but you know it has got to be abuse of her or the kids or both. the police are protecting her so i agree with the poster who guessed she gets a light sentence and plea bargain. but i think they will say the motive to explain why she gets that deal.

Why not untreated depression?

Just going with my gut feeling. Plain old depression, from what I've seen, generally leads to suicide or self-destructive behavior, whereas the mood-altering drugs seem to implicated in a lot of the incidents of outward violence.

Again, just a gut feeling. I'm probably being irresponsible by even speculating but I can't help myself!

They seem to have ruled out self-defense, so there aren't any good reasons for killing the guy. Abuse, either of the wife or children has been speculated. That was Mrs. Bruck's first guess.

That is certainly a possibility.A very real possibility. But it's not the only one.

Yes,it's true that women,in general, are not as prone to violence as are men.Yes,it's true that the huge majority of murders in this country are committed by men.

But there *are* women out there who are as cold, heartless and amoral as are all-too-many men these days.

She could have been motivated by abuse....or infidelity (his *or* her own)...insurance money..or a million other things.

If she claims abuse,I'd want to see proof. The more proof the better.Photos, police reports, testimony from disinterested people (e.g.,a neighbor with whom they were not friendly.....none of *her* relatives or friends).

And if she gets some feminist psychologist chanting "battered woman syndrome" without clear evidence of abuse *and* evidence that she took reasonable steps to stop/escape this abuse,I'll conclude that she's guilty, guilty,*guilty*!

Me too. Hard to believe she
could be so distraught with
him that she'd abruptly end
her daughters' home life.
OTOH, if there is evidence
that she exploded upon
learning HE had sexually
abused the girls...that's
a whole different kettle
of fish! She'll walk!

Well, since I have heard absolutely nothing about her motive, I'll reserve judgment until more is known.

Well no, based on the pictures and stories, and the hundreds of families I've met that look just like the Winklers (I grew up in the same denomination). That's why I'm suspecting a bad combination of mental disorder and pharmaceuticals.

Or maybe I'm reading your question wrong; if so, please correct me.
