Immigration Reform Markup
Sen. Arlen Spector (R-PA) chairs a full Judiciary Committee meeting to mark up pending legislation including a draft bill on comprehensive immigration overhaul. Also, the committee will vote on a bill to televise Supreme Court proceedings and judicial nominations to federal courts.
MON. ON C-SPAN AT 10AM ET
Are they voting on Lobbying Reform in the Senate now??
Final passage?
Graham says "no."
Kyl uses the example of a kid who snuck into a movie. The usher catches him. Instead of having to leave the movie, the usher lets the kid buy a ticket from his seat; but "back of the line" would have the kid leave the theater and standin the back of the line.
Good analogy, but doesn't reflect the predetermined solution here, which is to legitimize a certain segment of aliens who are presently in the country illegally, without much disruption to their activities.
The Kyl amendment failed.
Never mind...it is a nomination vote.
No. Dennis Spurgeon, Ass't Sec. Energy.
The lobbying reform Bill has a couple items lingering - one being Schumer's Dubai amendment, and the second being Frist's Internet proposal (IIRC on that second point).
And that is the predetermined outcome. "See, we aren't giving them citizenship, so y'all need to lighten up."
"NOT want to become AMERICAN citizens, they want to be Mexicans living in America legally, will ALL benefits, but NO ASSIMILATION..."
Exactly. They want to turn the country into Miami.
Durbin is getting testy about why they won't vote on such an "easy" amendment, making the illegals NOT being called "illegal"???
Oh, yeah---that makes sense.
I've hit this cspan coverage very intermittently today.
Is he for, against, soft in the middle?
Thanks for indulging me.
"They want to turn the country into Miami."
Or is it vice versa?
Durbin doesn't want them not only to not be CALLED illegals..he wants it to made "not criminal"..which makes them legal, I guess.
Isn't that amnesty??
It's denial of reality. He's pushing for breaking the law, because to do otherwise, is not PC.
Graham is in the McCain/Kennedy camp.
If no bill gets through committee, Frist has promised that his bill is going to be debated. Dingy Harry has promised a fillibuster of any bill that does not go through committee.
The process today is just a mad attempt to get something through by the end of the day. Specter is pushing hard to get this to the floor. Amendments will be made on the floor. The Senate version will go to conference. The House will not approve of anything that gives amnesty.
Damn. I used to like him too. Especially during the Clinton impeachment days.
Another "R" in the spineless column.
Thanks anyways - if I find the language, I will let you know.
A motion to take up Frist's bill is already on the floor, in the form of a cloture motion to take up his bill for debate. He filed both, the bill and the cloture motion, the Thursday before Congress took their recess.

It's an exercise in face-saving for the Judicairy Committee, and in particular, its chairman.

Yup. Plenty of debate to come. This is a very preliminary round.
I'm listening on XM Radio from the office so I'm missing quite a bit but I do get the sense that the chairman is more interested in getting done as opposed to what's getting done.
You would be correct....they are voting on final passage right now...and I can tell you that Cornyn, Kyl and Sessions...and I am sure Coburn who isn't there today..
will NOT be happy with this at all.
