If the midterm elections were held today, top strategists of both parties say privately, the Republicans would probably lose the 15 seats they need to keep control of the House of Representatives
Considering that Vice President Dick Cheney had come a long way to help Florida Congressman Ric Keller raise $250,000 last week, the reception he got in the Sunshine State could have been a bit warmer. After extolling Cheney as "one of the most effective Vice Presidents in the history of the U.S.," Keller launched into all the times he had recently opposed the Bush Administration, including the deal to allow a Dubai company to manage operations at several U.S. ports. And then Keller went right for the punch line: "'Don't be too hasty,'" he claimed the Vice President had pleaded with him. "'Let's go hunting. We'll talk about it.'"
As the campaign season kicks into gear, Republican incumbents are having a hard time figuring out how close they want to be to the White House. Voters have plenty to take out on Republican candidates this yearethics scandals, the g.o.p.'s failure to curb spending, the government's inept response to Hurricane Katrina, a confusing new prescription-drug program for seniors and, more than anything else, an unpopular President who is fighting an unpopular war. Iraq could make a vulnerability of the Republicans' greatest asset, the security issue.

Here's some real news on the RINO front, though:
"When Cheney flew to Newark, N.J., earlier in the week to raise nearly $400,000 that state senator Tom Kean Jr. badly needs in his bid for the U.S. Senate, the candidate didn't show up until 15 minutes after the Vice President's motorcade had left. Kean blamed the state's notorious traffic for his tardiness. Local papers confirmed that there hadn't been much congestion at the time."
Glad they took the time to repeat all of the media created accusations once again
Bob Menendez is a moron.
If Kean, Jr. can't beat him, it is because he is equally moronic.
The only thing that would mitigate against a gain right now is that a LOT of Republicans have retired and a couple, like Duke Cunningham, are out due to legal problems. This has opened up an abnormally high number of GOP seats. Still, I'd like someone to list for me not only the seats, but the DEM CANDIDATES who will win these seats to give them the House.
Republicans win elections in November.
Democrats need to turn out voters. That's going to be hard to do in an off year. I predict a very low turnout with Republicans winning most races.
"If Kean, Jr. can't beat him, it is because he is equally moronic."
Tom Kean, Jr. is another Lincoln Chafee. Has anybody asked Tom Jr. if he voted for W or Kerry in '04? Apparently he's too good to be seen with the vice president. I feel no need to vote in November's Senate race unless I see some changed behavior from Kean (in other words, he stops acting like a wimpy RINO who's afraid to be seen with Bush or Cheney.)
So it's an incredibly biased headline whose supporting evidence is that the GOP is probably in pretty good shape.
Why is it important if either party wins, we as a country still lose unless we elect people that will not just swear to uphold the Constitution, but understand what the document means. We must push for revealing insights into the thinking of candidates, not what party affiliation they are.

Sorry, boys, but as of right now, we're getting the shit kicked out of us. I know no-one likes it when someone criticizes the captain of the ship, but he's got us headed full speed towards an iceberg, and his only response he can give any criticism, no matter how sincere and constructive, is a bitch slap.
The Dubai deal may be a tempest in a tea cup, but for GOD'S SAKE, man... Could no-one in the administration see it coming? And the way he dealt with it was the worst way possible: Rather than suppose that maybe a lot of conservatives didn't quite understand the whole issue (as was plainly the case), he simply accused Republicans of knee-jerk hatred and racism. If he had come right out with the actual facts of the case, instead of spending three weeks slandering his allies, he'd've won them over. INstead, he started a civil war in the party.
Ya know what? Joe Schmoe's intuitive trust of the strong, pro-military guy isn't rock steady. Pictures of him holding hands with the UAE guy as they peruse the rose gardens were just icky. So then Dubai happens, THe result is that non-partisan people (98% of the electorate) don't say, "Well, I trust the president no matter what. They say, "I'm sure he's got a good reason, which he will explain right away, right Mr President? Mr President? Hello? Mr President?" But when the president's first response is, "WHO ARE YOU TO QUESTION ME, YOU INSOLENT PEASANT!" Well... Let me tell you, it took 30 years of the most absurdly stupid Democratic politicking on the part of the Democrats for the Republicans to earn the foreign-policy lead they had, and Bush destroyed it in a week.
Next issue: Immigration. The President may not believe it is a national security issue, but the people do. Again, the President's response is straight out of Howard Dean's playbook: call all his opponents racists. Now when Dean does it, it doesn't hurt the Republican party. BUt when the Republican President tells the American people that all the furvor and emotion they are witnessing in certain parts of the country are simply racism, guess what? Moderates and liberals and economic conservatives believe him.
"These elections are bigger than individual candidates."
I agree in most cases. But I also believe the Republican majority in the Senate would be stronger without Chafee than with it. He's just too divisive with his nonsense (not voting for W in '04, etc.)
And, from what I have seen, Kean Jr. doesn't have a conservative bone in his body. He's a RINO wimp like Chafee. Chafee may hold the seat in Rhode Island, but he dilutes the message and hurts the party in the other 49 states.
I agree that we may need to tolerate Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, George Voinovich, etc. But there are other cases in which we'd be better off with a Democrat in the seat.
Interesting even Bob Brinker on his radio show yesterday much to his sadness, admitted he didn't think the Congress would change hands in November. Kept accentuating "lame duck President" and how he prefers "gridlock" in Congress but since we won't have gridlock this year, nothing will change. My comment: Oh darn, those horrible ole Rep will just keep control of everything. When he gets on his soap box I usually just have to turn it off but actually have to hand it to him for admitting the D's just can't win. Bob rants continuously about the spending but never mentions that it would be worse if his darlings ever got in there again. One positive: My financial situation is quite good thanks to his suggestions in several areas.
*If* the election were held today. Big difference between now and Nov 7. I have little doubt the GOP will lose some ground in both houses, unfortunately. But the real campaign has not yet begun. The Repubs should have an edge in $$ to spend so if they run the right campaign with tough, effective ads, they can keep a majority in both houses.
What's President Bush's approval rating in New Jersey? About 10 percent? At this point, you could replace President Bush with the most right-wing firebrand... Imagine if Bob Dornan were a Senator... and the administration's approval ratings would rise 20%.
Appearing with Cheney earns someone in New Jersey all of the baggage of the Bush Administration (weasel-wording about immigration amnesties, Dubai ports, a sense of massive incompetence surrounding the issue of WMDs, exploding deficits) with none of the positive images (standing up to Iraq, the Taliban and France, a bold vision for the Middle East, Samuel Alito, and whatever conservative domestic issues Bush hasn't fled in panic from).

Of course, she will become smarter with age!

Until, mercifully...
Excellent post.
