GLAM GAL: "You only do prom once, and I've been planning this for over a year," says Brooklyn 17-year-old Jenna Cossuto. Photo: Graham Morrison
Jenna Cossuto spent $2,400 on her custom-made dress. She'll rent a 22-seat stretch Hummer to transport her closest friends to privately booked Gotham Hall. And then it's off to the swanky South Street Seaport at Bridgewater and afterward, a party in Crobar's VIP section before a long weekend in a Hamptons beach house.
But this once-in-a-lifetime weekend isn't for Cossuto's wedding. It's for this 17-year-old's senior prom.
She's part of a growing generation of teens who think of prom as the end all, be all of their young lives. "Teens think of prom as their Oscar night. They want to look and feel like celebrities," says Gina Kelly, fashion director at Seventeen magazine.
According to a Seventeen prom survey, girls spend an average of $833 for dress, shoes and accessories......(and) shell out $135 on beauty products, $105 at the salon and $206 for tickets and limos.
"I'm not sure exactly how much I'll spend, but probably thousands and thousands," said Cossuto. If she gets all she wants, the total will exceed $10,000. "My parents are just happy that I saved up myself for the dress, and they'll obviously help me pay for everything else I need."
Beyond the designer Jovani dress, which includes multi-carat Chopard diamonds, Cossuto got $550 Gucci shoes, a matching handbag, tanning sessions, eyebrow shaping and professional hair and makeup for the big day, June 7.
The only thing she hasn't nailed down? A date. "I don't care about that as much," said the teen, who will go to college at Florida International University in Miami. "I'll have one, but I don't want to make the wrong decision."

Yeah! You?
I never said otherwise.
Imagine being marries to this money monster ??? How can you top the prom ? Imagine what she'll want for her wedding . This kid is a monster. Yuckkkkkkkkk , what a turn off.
The children of illegals would do it much cheaper.
God bless you and your soldier husband.
Feh.
Never went to proms.
Never bothered with homecomings.
Too busy working after school to care about that crap.
I bet she will be way more beautiful inside and outside than this materialistic gal. Your daughter sounds like a sensible girl who is a joy to know.
My son is graduating from 8th grade this year. The school has expressly forbidden formals, tuxes and limos. I can only guess this is so because some idiot parents went along with formals and a limo for an 8th grade graduation.
BTW I came to live in the US in June 1983. Seeing all these young people dressed to the nines, I wrote home and said how impressed I was by the way teenagers dressed for dances!
LOL! A little learning is a dangerous thing.......
i went to four proms...
that is an ugly dress, is it actually the dress?, or a figment of a nightmare.
Sounds like an immature rich bitch that no one wants to date.
The terrorists finalize their next wave of attacks, China grows stronger and becomes one step closer to realizing their 1000 year dream of world domination, a million illegal invaders swarm the border, never to leave...
Let her and her friends have their prom! For this will be the highlight of what will prove to be a sad, wasted life cut short by the cruel, cruel, world surrounding them (and getting ever-so-closer).
You nailed it Captain! The sad reality is right in our faces but when you speak of it you are looked at with the 'deer in the headlights' look or just plain ridiculed.
Perhaps those things you mention color my thoughts even when posting to what most here would consider a 'trivial' thread. Hence my 'overreaction' which I've been called on already.
We have become a nation of sheeple, that's for sure (or 'fer shure' for the shallow pop culture world).
Yes, this is listed as a prom dress.
Ummm...yea that was me doing the ridiculing.
I do agree that there's no sense arguing anymore over something silly like this girl and her Ten Grand Prom Extravaganza.
But, I think that people who express the nihilistic view of the future like that one dude did (about the terrorists and the Chinese and the illegals etc etc...) ...DO need to be called out.
And I'm happy to do so.
But, hey, everybody has an opinion.
My advice: Don't be so embittered by other people's attempt to create happiness. As pathetic as it may appear to you.
Instead...just enjoy life.
Yeah, enjoy life.
Love Doc
I imagine the trust-fund metrosexual who sweeps her off her feet will be as high maintenance and superficial as she is.
We "need" air, food, water, shelter. We don't "need" prom dresses!
What a work ethic she has! //sarcasm
IMO: Future high maintenance woman!
Same number as me. The only one I had fun at was one I went to at a different high school than I attended with a friend who really needed a date. We had no high expectations for the evening and wound up having a great time.
Worst one was probably my Senior Prom. My date got laid. I didn't.
These are the little twerps who book up all the best halls on Long Island, making a May wedding on ten-months notice IMPOSSIBLE.
