State Treasurer Phil Angelides said Friday that as governor he would close corporate tax loopholes and raise taxes on the highest income earners to increase education funding for K-12 schools, the same tax proposals he's made to cut tuition at California's public colleges. Speaking at a Capitol rally organized by the California Federation of Teachers to criticize Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for his education funding policies, Angelides called for higher teacher salaries and a full commitment to the state's Proposition 98 guarantee.
"It's time for a governor who's actually willing to ask multimillionaires to chip in, ask corporations to chip in, so we can have the best-educated kids and the best economy in the world," Angelides said.
Angelides also has proposed higher taxes on high-income earners and closing corporate tax loopholes to finance lower tuition. And he backs director Rob Reiner's Proposition 82, a June ballot initiative to increase taxes on individuals earning more than $400,000 and couples earning more than $800,000 to pay for preschool for any family that wants it.

Do Californians want increased taxes, that is the question.

Angelides calls himself a champion of "progressive values." As state treasurer, he has pushed public pension funds to dump tobacco stocks, invest in urban renewal projects and pressure corporations into cleaning up the environment. A close ally of labor, he also supports abortion rights, gay marriage, gun control and driver's licenses for illegal immigrants.
If he makes it into a general-election race, his call for increasing taxes could pose problems; Schwarzenegger has been steadfast in opposing higher taxes.

Teachers union backs Angelides for governor Treasurer says he'd raise taxes to fund education

Standing beside the head of the powerful California Teachers Association, Democratic state Treasurer Phil Angelides vowed Thursday to pump more money into education if he is elected governor, even if he has to raise taxes to do it.
While California ranks near the national average in per-pupil spending, that isn't good enough, said Angelides, who was in San Francisco to receive the endorsement of the 335,000-member teachers union.
The billions of dollars needed to pay for that boost in school spending will come from closing tax loopholes for big corporations, cracking down on tax scofflaws and boosting taxes on the richest Californians.
The state's wealthiest taxpayers already have received billions in tax breaks from the Bush administration, Angelides said.
"We can ask them to give some of that back," he said.
No politician in California talks about the millions that are wasted by the educational establishment and that's not counting the other millions that are sucked up by graft and corruption. And, by the way, I know teachers here in California that are very adequately paid for the few days they work per year. Angelides-what a joke!
Though we all may not agree with Arnold 100% and for those who almost make a career ripping him apart, Angelides is your guy or any one else like him.
That is the choice, unless some folks want to truck in 4 or 5 million Republicans.
I will support Arnold.
At least this one is right out in the open - none of this "it's for the children" crap. Nope, this is going to be a big payoff to the teacher's union.
By the way, what do we currently spend per capita for education in California? With all the special taxes, bonds, and gambling revenue, it must be getting near $15,000 each by now.
Sounds like a wonderful reason to keep him from becoming governor.

As much as "the rich" are being taxed/penalized in CA, I'm wondering when they will start to leave the state. Or has that already begun? I know that if I were worth millions, I would get damn sick and tired of being singled out and punished for my success.
Angelides went to the Hillary Clinton school of economics:
"Many of you are well enough off that ... the tax cuts may have helped you," Sen. Clinton said. "We're saying that for America to get back on track, we're probably going to cut that short and not give it to you. We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."

Angelides' Hillary school of economics not only only would sink the state but the entire U.S. also.
Sounds like he is trying to buy votes.
Who do you think most teachers are going to opt for in the election.
LOL! Charity huh?

Fascism uses explicit populist rhetoric; calls for a heroic mass effort to restore past greatness; and demands loyalty to a single leader, often to the point of a cult of personality.

As a native of this state I have seen the change to the liberal in the population and most you won't change.
Arnold would not be my first choice but that is as good as we will get. When third party populist ie Paddy Buchanan run in elections, it splits the vote and his kind gave us Carter and Clinton.
