Hackers boot a Dell with Mac OS X (Intel). March 24, 2006 -- Unidentified programmers have hacked the Intel version of Mac OS X to enable it to boot a Dell PC. A file called the "JaS4.2b patch" can be used to create a customized installer DVD for installing on a Dell PC.
A website called MacaDell describes the patch. The MacDell site has also has a page that describes how to use the JaS4.2b patch to create a customized installer disc for Mac OS X.
Using the hack is illegal because it breaks Apples Mac OS X license agreement, which specifies that the operating system be run on an Apple-labeled computer.
According to MacaDell, work on the hack began when a Russian hacker known as Maxxuss cracked the encrypted security layer in Mac OS X that usually requires the software to be installed on a certain Mac model. Other hackers added to the work, and a programmer known as JaS put the work together in the JaS4.2b patch.
The hack emulates the EFI boot firmware found in Intel-based Macs. It also emulates an instruction set called SSE3 in order to support processors older than the Dual Core used in the Intel Macs. MacaDell reports that the hack doesnt work on every computer, and doesnt support some functions, such as wireless networking and certain audio and video cards.
At this point, the Intel version of Mac OS X is only available with the purchase of an Intel-based Mac.
If you want to pay top dollar for old outdated hardware more power to ya.

Nahhh..., I sold my older stuff. I went out and bought some new Mac stuff a few months ago.
Oh..., that reminds me -- one more nice thing about Macintosh computers is that they last a lot longer than the PC-trashboxes. Their "end of life" doesn't come but several years later than the other trashboxes. So, the Mac users also save a lot of money because their software runs a lot longer on older machines, not necessitating the constant upgrade cycles of the PC-trashboxes.
They stay younger longer. Hooo boy, what a deal!
Oh..., and that's another reason why the sales numbers are skewed to the low side. Macintosh users are not forced to upgraded as often, because their computers work longer and last longer. The installed base is a lot larger than is indicated -- as compared to the PC-trash, because on the trashboxes, they're out-of-date quicker and are replaced more often and/or upgraded faster.
There are just so many reasons to get a Macintosh, that I forget half of them and it's still too much to remember.

Your Mac was outdated when you bought it, thats the point.

The Communists said they would bury us, too. We can now see who was telling the truth. Some of them might have even "believed" what they were saying. Isn't that just too bad...
Now..., go on back to your sandpile with the wires and components and let the adults take care of their business...
Haven't you heard..., Kids should be seen and not heard....

what is your obsession with wire and componets? I bet my System looks better than your Mac.

You're in love with the components, not me...

Don't forget the best reason of all - when you get a Mac, you get to spend a bunch of your free time online, explaining to people what dumbasses they are for not being just like you, and if they weren't so stupid, they would be just like you, so hurry up and buy a Mac, you dope. Hard to believe people react badly to that kind of evangelism, isn't it?

Can't think of a better reason to get a Macintosh than to stay on FreeRepublic.com.
Glad you thought of it....

I dunno - I must be doing something wrong. I bought a Mac, but I didn't turn into an ass. Is there some optional upgrade I missed?

Yeah... it's called "Intelligent Design"

In any case, if I hadn't encountered this sort of thing all to often, I'd be pretty sure you were nothing more than a Microsoft shill. If I wanted to discourage people from switching, I can't think of anything more effective than the kind of "advocacy" you've displayed here. If you can't make mature, thoughtful points about the positive aspects of your system, without simultaneously slagging anyone who's shown the execrable taste to choose otherwise, perhaps you should retire and allow someone a bit more circumspect to step in. Just a thought.
No they won't. Back in the 90s Apple tried cloning and it literally ate their lunch. Apple figured they were losing $200 for every licensed copy of the Mac OS that was shipping on other computers. Now, I am guilty because I bought three Power Computing clones and I still have one--in the garage somewhere.
People keep saying that they could just license clones and they would make a fortune and millions of computers would be sold. This is just dead wrong. Look at what clones did for IBM. Since Apple still makes most of thier money off of hardware they couldn't make an immediate switch to software--there's no installed base to sell to. They would have to do it gradually and I just don't think they could make any money at it.

Well.., certainly..., if I had a trash-PC. I'd be pulling some wires and components out right now -- and wouldn't have any time to post.

...or not. Your choice. Sorry if I don't see the need to tear everyone else down in order to build myself up. But if you get a rush from it, who am I to argue?
