Big 5 Bust?

** Last night's "Big Five" meeting reported here, between Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Democratic and Republican legislative leaders on their next steps for moving some version of the big infrastructure bonds package forward, seems to have come up with little so far. Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata summed up afterward saying the governor was urging a legislative solution. Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez continues to hold out some hope for the school construction and levee repair bonds passed in his house. Republican sources say their caucuses are less than enthused.

Republican sources say their caucuses are less than enthused.

Curious, on the surface, in the face of the votes on the 15th. But ... it was speculated that the Republican votes in the Assembly were throw away votes to get the WG off their backs.

14 voted to support Nunez's bail out of the LAUSD, 23 voted to support the Austrian's green, Sacramento River, reclamation bill, but every Republican Assemblyman knew, when they cast their vote, that the vote didn't matter since the Senate had adjourned.

It's a mess. Sausage is one thing, but scrapple is something else entirely.
Time to give it up.

Yeah, the answer to everything in California is another bond issue. At some point, the CA debt will be higher than the US debt. The CA state government might even surpass Congress in its annual deficit in another decade of Dimocrat rule.

6 PM UPDATE: Our friend Sac Bee columnist Dan Weintraub has a different spin on this, that the "Little Four" of Democratic and Republican legislative leaders are working on a package to present the governor. The Democratic version, since you insist, sans euphemism, of the reality coming out of last night's "Big Five" meeting with Arnold is that the governor has "punted" the issue back to the Legislature. A deal will happen when it happens. Nothing happened today. Don't wait up.

I wouldn't be surprised if it involved a legislative deal rather than something placed on the ballot. If something can be done before June, that would my preference. I don't see a bond happening because of election year politics. So if the "Little Four" come up with something that can get their caucuses to vote for it, the Governor will sign it. Still, it a long ways to get there.
